Der Walterplatz bildet den zentralsten Punkt in Bozen.
Im Jahre 1808 veranlasste König Maximilian Joseph I. von Bayern den Bau dieses Platzes, der anfangs auch dessen Namen trug. Danach wurde der Platz nach Erzherzog Johann von Österreich Johannesplatz genannt, bis er im Jahre 1901 Walther von der Vogelweide gewidmet wurde.
Jedoch nachdem Südtirol zu Italien gekommen war, wurde der Name des Platzes erneut geändert und nach dem italienischen König Viktor Emanuel III benannt. Erst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg erhielt der Platz wieder seine alte Bezeichnung: Walther von der Vogelweide - Platz und wird bis heute so genannt.
In der Mitte des Platzes befindet sich ein marmornes Denkmal des Minnesängers Walther von der Vogelweide, welches von dem Vinschgauer Bildhauer Heinrich Natter 1889 errichtet wurde. Jedoch auch dieses wurde von den faschistischen Gemeindebehörden nicht geduldet und in den abgelegenen Roseggpark versetzt. Erst 1985 brachte man es an seinen ursprünglichen Standort, dem Walterplatz, zurück.

Nel 1808 Joseph Maximilian I re di Baviera ha fatto costruire questa piazza, che all'inizio portava il suo nome. Poi la piazza è stata rinominata in Johannesplatz secondo l'arciduca d'Austria Johann, fin quando nel 1901 è stata dedicata a Walther von der Vogelweide.

Walther von der Vogelweide - a monument for the popular minne singer is located on THE piazza in the centre.
First this piazza beared the name of King Maximilian Joseph I, afterwards it was named after archduke John from Austria, that is to say "Johannesplatz". And since 1901 it has been named after the popular Medieval minne singer.
The statue of minne singer Walther von der Vogelweide is located in the middle of a fountain on Piazza Walther. It has been designed by the artist Heinrich Natter from Val Venosta in 1889 and is made of oure white marble from Laas. In 1935 the fascists arranged for the statue to be shifted into the Rosenegger park. In 1985, however, the statue has been taken back to its original location.
By the way, in daily life Piazza Walther is a meeting place for all those who would like to sit comfortably in front of a Café. This is also where the Christmas market, the Flower market, the Pumpkin festival and many more events take place.
However, after Südtirol had come to Italy, the name of the square was changed again after the Italian king Victor Emmanuel III. Only after the 2nd World War the square became back its old name: Walther von der Vogelweide - and the square is still so named.
