Geocache Description:

At the monument to a nearby Native American shellmound, head on a bearing of 200 degrees true for 150 feet. It's not near the fence or under any ivy. Cache is wheelchair accessible.

The nearby Ohlone shellmound was but one of over 425 that have been destroyed in the name of development throughout the Bay Area. Their historical significance has been relegated to the occasional street name or plaque, despite the fact that many would be considered archeologically important today.

Time permitting, take a walk around Alameda's second oldest park, opened on 1909, the centennial of it's namesake's birth. The ornate cast-iron fence along High Street is one of the few vestiges of this parcel's previous owner, R. R. Thompson, a wealthy businessman whose opulent and uninsured mansion was destroyed by fire in 1884 leaving his large estate, then called Rosebush, vacant for a quarter century. The nearby small rustic lodge, built in 1909 originally as a women's lodge, has served as a clubhouse and park office, but is now simply a fancy storage shed.
