West of SD Highway #1804 about 1 mile north of the state highway junction at the east end of Oahe Dam in central SD.
To get there drive north from Pierre, SD along State Highway 1804 about 5 miles to its junction with State Highway 204 which is the road over the top of the dam.

From there drive North 0.75 mile (just past milepost 257) to a minor road intersection. Take the graveled road to the left (West). Follow it west and north (past the picnic area) approximately 0.4 mile until it turns west (toward the reservoir) again. Park here. Proceed on foot north along the trace of an old roadway along the toe of the escarpment for about 450 feet to the cache at the referenced coordinates.

(The description below is from the original.) "placed inside the box of an abandoned farm implement (Drill) left from a farm operation in the early part of the last century. It is easy to see and easy to access when you reach it. This location can also be found by going due west from Highway 1804 at the proper latitude."

Hope you enjoy the search.

This cache is a replacement for the original cache that was the first cache placed in South Dakota. The GC number is new but the cache listing and coordinates are from the original. The cache container has moved slightly to prevent it from the fate that befell the original. The original GC number was archived too long to be restored.

Decided to try to do this one, even with snow on the ground. Great view. TFTC TNLN SL

Stumbled onto this cache when back tracking to the vehicle after not finding another that was supposed to be in the area. Beautiful fall day, beautiful views, good times.

Greetings from Watertown, SD.

One of my geocaching goals was to find the first SD cache. Since I live in Watertown, it was no easy task to get to Pierre to find this one, but I was in town for a meeting and since I was close, I had to make it happen.

What a view from the road looking at the river and the Oahe dam.

If the road would have been wet, I don't think I could have gotten within walking distance, but it worked out great.

NGComets told me this cache was active again. So on this trip to the aea, it was one of my goals to seek this one out. Found on lunch break. TFTC
