Weaving a Tale: Quarry Story.
The Hefferson Rock and Gravel Company had been in business a long
time. In it's meager beginnings, there was only a small crew and
the senior Hefferson, George. When the first order was quarried,
the proud George kept the first block to show his pride in his
quarry and his crew. Later, as George and his new wife started a
family, The Hefferson Rock and Gravel Company became Hefferson and
Son Rock and Gravel Company. They named their son Roger.
The years passed, the quarry expanded, and so did the Hefferson
Family. Roger soon took a wife and the lineage grew in length,
adding a son, Rock, and a younger brother, Chip. The Company now
had three generations to run the family business.
Over the years, the first 'Old Block' was an inspiration to all the
workers. The family had a memorial plaque installed and the plaque
was added to on the significant anniversaries.
We've woven the start of the story, now comes the
unravelling....
The majority of the managing duties came down onto the two
grandsons. However, Rock and Chip had completely different
management styles. Rock watched the progress and made plans,
trusting the workers to do their jobs well. Chip was constantly
watching and ordering, generally annoying the workers. They let it
slide, he was one of the family, and the family had treated them
well.
Then the day. Chip was all worked up about expanding, but the one
thing in the way was the block with the plaque. He wanted it moved,
Rock did not. After an argument, Chip stormed out and started
ordering the workers around. They didn't like the idea of moving
it, but he was the boss. A crane swung in, Chip climbed up to
attach the cables, and the lift began. A cable shifted, the block
tilted and Chip was broken and dead in the bottom of the
quarry.
Roger, George and Rock all rushed down, unbelieving.
The police were called and all the workers were interviewed by
detectives.
One worker when asked, replied, "One second he was on top, then the
next, he was a Chip off the 'Old Block'".
