Geocache Description:

We've had our eyes on this walkway for awhile now, and it appears to be open at the Bunche Dr. end, so we took a family walk to see what we could see. What ended up being interesting was what we could hear.

Bring a snack or a lunch, sit on the picnic tables and listen to the prerecorded messages.

Here's a little more information about the area, via the NWR...

The area you ask about is not actually managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. It is currently managed by ProLogis Development and will be turned over to the City of Fremont soon. It is a storm water retention basin. It was built by ProLogis as part of the Development Plan for the area. The sounds you heard were intended to keep the thousands of gulls from the landfill from overrunning the pond. The sounds are used BOTH at the storm water retention pond and at the landfill. Landfills can encourage an overpopulation of gulls which can cause problems for other wildlife through displacement, trampling, and predation. The sounds are intended to discourage large numbers of gulls, however, the gulls do become accustomed to the sounds eventually. The landfill and ProLogis are looking at other ways to discourage high gull use.
