“Of course Pico do Areeiro is one of the most attractive points on Madeira, but sometimes it’s like an anthill. In this case I have an alternative for you. In good weather the view to Funchal and to the mountains is even better.
It’s “A Rock” – nameless, and no track is leading directly to this boulder. You have to find out the best way to get up – and you have to climb. Depending on the side you try, it’s more or less difficult. In bad weather with fog forget it. There’s nearly no mark to orientate and you get lost in one of the abysses. The journey is the reward!
Don’t forget you are walking on the top of the mountains of Madeira. Take to eat and to drink with you. Mountain boots and anorak are a must. There are no regularly bus lines to Pico do Areeiro. You have to rent a car or to drive by taxi.

“Claro que o Pico do Areeiro é um dos pontos mais atraentes da Madeira, mas às vezes é como um formigueiro. Neste caso tenho uma alternativa para você. Com bom tempo a vista para o Funchal e para a serra é ainda melhor.
É “A Rock” – sem nome, e nenhuma pista leva diretamente a esta pedra. Você tem que descobrir a melhor maneira de se levantar – e tem que subir. Dependendo do lado que você tenta, é mais ou menos difícil. Com mau tempo e nevoeiro, esqueça. Quase não há marca para orientar e você se perde em um dos abismos. A jornada é a recompensa!
Não se esqueça que está a caminhar no topo da serra da Madeira. Leve para comer e beber com você. Botas de montanha e anoraque são obrigatórios. Não existem linhas regulares de autocarro para o Pico do Areeiro. Você tem que alugar um carro ou dirigir de táxi.”
