Zorndorf 1758 Memorial Cache Traditional Geocache

On the way from Zorndorf to Quartschen the main street crosses the old battlefield of Zorndorf. During the 7-Years-War on 25th August 1758 the Prussian main army clashed onto the Russian forces for the first time. The battle toggled over the whole day in the summer heat. With high losses on both sites ( 30.000 man dead) the Prussians controlled in the evening the battle field.

Nevertheless the Prussian victory on the Oder has had more the value of a stand-off. A further confrontation was only a question of time. The military theoretician Carl von Clausewitz came later to a similar opinion and has had thus only an ambivalent opinion to the battle.
The cache is positioned in the near of that point on which Frederic II ( the Great) has controlled the battle. On that point was situated a memorial until 1945. In year 2010 money have been supplied (also from the European Union) to renew this place and the memorial again.
The poet Theodor Fontane has described in the “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg” this place and if you have this book chapter ready to hand than you can see that not so much has been changed around.
