Utrecht Pub Crawl Multi-cache

Dit is een stadswandeling van ongeveer 7km door Utrecht langs 26 café's met als beloning een mooie cache! Je mag bij elk café een biertje nuttigen maar de kans dat je na het laatste waypoint de cache kunt vinden wordt dan wel een stuk kleiner.

Toe maar, 26 café's? Heb ik dan wel de tijd om wat te drinken? Jazeker, je hebt de gelegenheid om hier en daar even te zitten en wat te nuttigen. De route loopt namelijk ongeveer in de vorm van een 8. Hierdoor is het mogelijk om de route in twee keer te doen. Wil je dit doen? Breek de route dan af na Stadskasteel Oudaen (Waypoint N) en ga op een ander tijdstip met Willem Slok (Waypoint O) verder.

Om de cache te vinden dien je bij alle 26 café's een vraag te beantwoorden. Voor het beantwoorden van een aantal vragen is het noodzakelijk om het café binnen te gaan (je ziet dan een icoontje). Mis je een antwoord? Niet getreurd want voor elk van de twee gedeeltes is er een controlegetal aanwezig. De coördinaat bovenaan de pagina brengt je naar een centraal punt in Utrecht waar je goed van start kan gaan, of je nou met de auto, met het OV, op de fiets of te voet bent.

Veel succes en plezier maar vergeet niet: "Geniet, maar drink met mate!" en zoek een BOB uit als je met de auto bent.

Bereikbaarheid
Het centrum van Utrecht is goed bereikbaar op de fiets en met het OV (Utrecht Centraal Station). Als je met de auto bent kun je bijvoorbeeld gebruik maken van de vele (betaalde) parkeergarages rond en in het centrum.

De stash is een klein kluisje met een code erop (zie de hint voor de code) en ligt ergens binnen. De cache is dus niet 24/7 beschikbaar, maar alleen tussen een uur of 10:00 's ochtends en afhankelijk van de drukte een uur of 03:00 's nachts. De waypoints/café's waar je naar binnen moet om een vraag te beantwoorden zijn daarentegen ook niet allemaal 24/7 beschikbaar. Let a.u.b. op de openingstijden (die vermeld staan) bij het uitvoeren van de 'binnenvragen'!

This cache is a pub crawl through Utrecht city centre past 26 pubs and a nice stash in the end as a reward! You can enjoy a beer at every pub if you want but be aware that you still have to find the cache at the end.

Will I have time to drink something with so many pubs to visit you might ask? Of course! You will have ample opportunity to sit and have a drink and a bite to eat. The crawl more or less follows a figure 8. This way you can do the pubcrawl in two visits. If you want to do this stop at Stadskasteel Oudaen (Waypoint N) and stat at Willem Slok (Waypoint O) at another time.

To find the cache you will have to answer a question at all 26 pubs. To answer some of the questions it is necessary to enter the pub (you will see a icon). If you have missed an answer, no worries because for both parts of the walk there is a control number available. The coordinate at the top of the page will take you to a central point in Utrecht that is a good place to start, whether by car, public transport, by bike or on foot.

Good luck and have fun but don't forget: "Alcohol, know your limits!" and don't drink and drive.

Availibility
The centre of Utrecht is easily reached by bike or public transport (Utrecht Central Station). If you come by car you can use one of many (paid) parking garages in and around the centre.

The stash itself is a small safe with a code on it (see hint for this code) and can be found inside. Hence the cache is not available 24/7 but only between roughly 10:00 in the morning and, depending on how busy it is, about 03:00 at night. The waypoints/pubs where you will have to enter to answer a question are also not open 24/7 so please mind the opening hours mentioned.

Dit café is gevestigd in de voormalige Maria Minor Kerk, van oorsprong een schuilkerk (kerk zonder uiterlijke kenmerken van een kerk). Er hangt in Olivier ('oolievjee') een nostalgische sfeer, toen een paar jaar geleden begonnen is met de ombouw naar een café wilden de architecten zoveel mogelijk elementen behouden als een altaarnis, gewelven en het orgel. Voor de Belgische sfeer zijn er donkere lambriseringen, kroonluchters en andere decoratiematerialeren aangebracht. Zeker een bezoek waard!

Aan de achterkant van de bar (vanaf ingang gezien) staat bovenop de bar een beeldje. Is dit een roze olifantje (113), een poesje (349) of een kabouter (185)?

This pub is housed in the former Maria Minor Church, a house church or hidden church (a church without the outer appearance of a church). Olivier has a nostalgic atmosphere, when they started the conversion to a pub a few years back they wanted to preserve the original elemens of the church like the altar, the arches and the organ. To incorporate the Belgian atmosphere they placed dark panelling, chandeliers and other decorative materials. Definitely worth a visit!

At the back of counter (as seen from the entrance), you can find a small statue on top of the counter bar. Is it a pink elephant (113), a kitten (349) or a garden gnome (185)?

Een klein blues/jazz café waar je ook goed terecht kunt voor een snelle hap. Vooral de tosti "'t College" is aan te raden, voor als je echt honger hebt. Als het druk in de stad is blijft vooral het winkelend publiek hier hangen vanwege de direct ligging aan de drukke winkelstraat.

Achter de bar (rechts, boven het espresso apparaat) hangt een oud gulden bankbiljet. Wat is de waarde van het biljet?

A small blues/jazz pub where you can also get a good meal. We recommend the tosti (toast) "'t College", especially when you're really hungry. When it's crowded in town many shoppers set down here because it's situated right on the busy shopping street.

Behind the bar there's an old Dutch guilder banknote (at the right, above the espresso machine). What's its value?

Nog een café met een artistiek tintje in een wat rustiger stukje Utrecht. In 1978 werd hier een eerste filmvoorstelling gegeven van een op de bovenste verdieping gevestigd filmproductiebedrijf. Dit productiebedrijf vormde o.a. de aanleiding voor de oprichting van het tegenwoordige Nederlands Film Festival. Je kunt hier terecht voor films die je niet in de 'normale' bioscopen vindt (arthouse). Let op, als je op het terras plaatsneemt mag je zelf de drankjes halen :)

Op één van de glas in lood ramen vind je een jaartal. Welk jaartal? Stapeltel (optellen tot één cijfer) dit jaartal.

Another pub with an artistic touch in a quiter part of Utrecht. The first film was shown here in 1978, produced by the film company located on the top floor. This film company was one of the reasons for the founding of the present-day Nederlands Film Festival. You can watch films here that you will not find in most other theaters (arthouse). When you take a seat on the terrace, be sure to get your own drinks inside :)

On one of the stained glass windows you will find a year. What year? Reduce this year to one digit.

Café Derat is een oud café, sinds 1895 kreeg het destijds "Smeetoren"genoemde café annex slijterij al een drankvergunning. De huidige naam is afgeleid aan de vondst van een versteende rat bij een eigenaarswisseling in 1978. De rat is nog steeds in het café te vinden.

Op de hekjes voor de ramen vind je een aantal groepjes met cirkels. Tel het aantal cirkels (halve cirkels tel je als hele cirkels).

Derat is an old pub, the pub and liquor store then called "Smeetoren" got its license in 1895. The current name is derived from a petrified rat found when the pub got a new owner in 1978. You can still find the rat in the pub.

Dit café uit 1976 specialiseert zich in thema-avonden en popmuziek. Het is een van de bekendere muziekcafés door de vele vrije sessies, open podiumavonden en optredens.

This pub from 1976 specialises in theme nights and pop music. It is one of the known music pubs because of the many public sessions, open stage nights and performances.

Een klein café waar je vooral mensen uit de buurt zult vinden. Je kunt er voor een klein café onverwacht veel verschillende bieren, wijnen en whiskas (meervoud van whisky?) vinden. Eens in de zoveel tijd is er ook een expositie van schilderijen of foto's. Het mooi gelegen café aan de Oudegracht is een paar jaar geleden zelfs vereerd met koninklijk bezoek in de vorm van Maxima en kinders.

Op het raam boven de deur vind je een ster. Hoeveel punten heeft deze?

A small pub where you will probably only find some locals. Despite being a small pub you can find many types of beer, wine and whiskas (plural for whisky?) here. Occasionally you will find expositions of paintings or photographs here. This nicely situated pub on the Oudegracht has been honoured by a royal visit by Maxima and children a few years ago.

Het Ledig Erg-plein is een druk horecaplein in Utrecht, aan het einde van de Oudegracht en bij de oude stadspoort langs de Singel. Zodra het zonnig wordt zitten de terrasjes snel vol. Café Ledig Erf is een knusse pub waar je oude en nieuwe tafelspellen kunt spelen. Het café heeft een uitgebreide collectie Nederlandse en Belgische bieren en is lid van de Alliantie van Biertapperijen.

The Ledig Erf square is a busy nightlife square in Utrecht at the end of the Oudegracht and near the old city gate along the Singel. As soon as the weather picks up the terraces attract a crowd. It's a cozy pub where you can find and play old and new family games. The pub has a extensive collection of Dutch and Belgian beers and is member of the Allianctie van Biertapperijen ('Alliance of Beer Tenders').

Lijn 4 is a bar where you can go for the extensive beer menu with beers from draft as well as bottled. It is also a good place to go for dinner. Twice a month you can go here for a pubquiz and music quiz to test your knowledge while enjoying one of the nice beers.

De naam Dorstige Hartsteeg dateert uit 1687 of eerder en is ontleend aan de herberg De Drie Dorstige Harten die hier stond (hart betekent hier overigens hert). Het huidige proeflokaal draagt daarom heel toepasselijk de naam De Drie Dorstige Herten. Naast 9 tapbieren en ruim 140 bieren op de fles schenken ze hier ook een ruime selectie aan wijnen, single malt whiskeys en jenevers. Verwacht hier geen groot terras. Al het proeven gebeurt binnen.

The name of the alleyway Dorstige Hartsteeg dates from 1687 or earlier and is taken from the inn De Drie Dostige Harten that stood here (hart meaning hert, dorstig meaning thirsty). The current café is therefore appropriately named De Drie Dorstige Herten. In addition to 9 draft beers and over 140 bottled beers, they also serve a wide selection of wines, single malt whiskeys and jenevers. Do not expect a large outside seating here. All the drinking is done indoors.

This pub is famous for being one of the prominent beer estabilishments in Utrecht. The pub is located at a beautiful spot on the Oudegracht and you can even sit outside in the summer (only a few chairs available though). Inside the pub you directly stumble upon the bar with its many draught fonts.

Als je de gelijknamige film kent, dan kun je je voorstellen dat de inrichting van dit café niet heel standaard is. En dat is ook zo, poppenhoofden, ornithologische overzichtskaarten? Het is er allemaal. Of je nou binnen zit of buiten op het terras zit, er is genoeg keuze voor een drankje en eventueel wat erbij.

If you know the movie, then you can imagine that the decoration of this bar might not be standard. Heads of puppets, ornitholigic charts? You can find it all in here. But of course you can also enjoy a beer and maybe even a snack inside or outside on the nice terrace.

Dit café ligt achter (of voor) het stadhuis. Vanaf het terras dat bijna de hele dag in de zon ligt heb je dan ook een mooi zicht op alle mensen die langs komen, zoals alle vers getrouwde bruidsparen die het stadhuis uitkomen.

Tegen de achterwand hangt de voorkant van een rode Buick uit Florida. Neem de waarde van de eerste letter van het kenteken en vermenigvuldig het antwoord met 60.

This pub is behind (or in front of) city hall. From the terrace that is in the sunlight almost the entire day you have a good view of all the people walking by including all the newlywed couples coming out of city hall.

The front part of a red Buick from Florida hangs against the back wall. Take the letter value of the first letter of the license plate number and multiply this by 60.

You can find De Beurs in the center of Utrecht on the Neude square. In summertime you can spent your days on the large terrace enjoying the weather, the food and of course a pint! That is, if you can find a spot. It can get pretty crowded here in summer.

In dit prachtige kasteel of versterkt woonhuis uit de 14e eeuw aan de Oudegracht vind je een proeflokaal en een restaurant terug. In het proeflokaal kun je o.a. de Jonge en de Ouwe Daen uitproberen die in de aan de werf gelegen stoombierbrouwerij gebrouwen worden. De inrichting is nog geheel in oude stijl. Wil je een rondleiding, reserveer dan wel van tevoren!

Op het eerste grote schilderij dat je tegenkomt in Oudaen zie je rechts aan de onderkant van het schilderij een meisje met een dier. Is dit een hond (1), een kat (2) of een hobbelpaard (3)?

In this magnificent 14th century castle or reinforced house sitting on the Oudegracht you will find a tasting room and a restaurant. Amongst others you can try the Jonge ('Young') and the Ouwe ('Old) Daen in the tasting room which are brewed here in the basement beside the gracht. The layout and design is still original. If you would like a tour, be sure to make a reservation!

On the first large painting you see when you enter Oudaen you will see a little girl in the lower right corner of the painting holding an animal. Is this a dog (1), a cat (2) of a rocking horse (3)?

Een bekend café waar vroeger (en nog steeds) bekenden en onbekenden in debat gaan over allerlei onderwerpen. Van oudsher was dit al, de naamgever Willem Slok zorgde ervoor dat mensen uit alle lagen van de bevolking naar zijn café kwamen. Dit zorgde natuurlijk vanzelf voor de nodige discussie. Ook zijn er tegenwoordig optredens van diverse lokale muzikanten.

A famous pub where known and unknown people used to debate on various local, national or communal problems. This has been happening since the opening of the pub when namegiver Willem Slok tried to get people in his pub from all walks of life. This mix of guests alone led to much debate in the pub. Nowadays you can also find local musicians performing here.

Sinds 1901 is dit pand al in gebruik als café, sinds 1937 door Café Dikke Dries. Marinus Johannes de Winter (1901-1952) was dik van postuur en noemde zijn café naar zichzelf zoals gebruikelijk in Wijk C. Iedereen had hier wel een bijnaam die je je hele leven bij je droeg! In het café vind je nu foto's van oud bezoekers van het café.

Op het straatnaambordje op de gevel van het café staat een jaartal. Deel de som van de eerste twee cijfers door de som van de laatste twee cijfers.

This building has been occupied by a pub since 1901, by Café Dikke Dries since 1937. Marinus Johannes de Winter (1901-1952) was a big man and named his pub after himself ('dikke' translates roughly as 'fat') as was a common thing in 'Neighbourhood C' in Utrecht. Everybody had a nickname here, and it was a nickname for life! You will find photographs of old visitors inside the pub.

Een bruin café waar je in de zomer heerlijk op het terras buiten kunt gaan zitten. Ook kun je hier terecht voor een kop koffie met appelgebak of een lunch. De naam komt van de op zaterdag gehouden lapjesmarkt. Voor in het café vind je een biljart.

A 'brown café' (traditional Dutch) where you can enjoy the sun on the terrace in the summer. You can also go here for a coffee with applepie or have lunch. The name comes from the 'lapjesmarkt' (textile market) which is here every Saturday. You will find a pool table in front of the pub.

De Bastaard is al sinds 1984 in handen van dezelfde eigenaar. In de zomer kun je plaatsnemen op het gezellige tuinterras. De Bastaard wordt af en toe omgetoverd in een theater, waar kleinschalige toneelvoorstellingen plaatsvinden. Misschien dat je mede hierdoor vooral creatieve en artistieke mensen terug zult vinden in het café.

De Bastaard has been with the same owner since 1984. In summertime you can drink you beer on the cosy garden terrace. De Bastaard will be transformed into a small theater every now and then and small drama acts will be performed. Dit terras zit altijd vol en daardoor ook een beetje krap. Maar binnen kun je plaatsnemen op lederen banken maar ook bioscoopstoelen. Keuze genoeg dus qua zitplaats en ook als je goedkoop wilt eten. Wees niet verrast als er opeens een kat op je schoot ploft...die woont hier, jij bent slechts op bezoek.

De terrace in the front is always full and a little cramped. But inside there is plenty of choice for seats: leather sofa's but also cinema chairs. There also cheap lunch and dinner here. Don't be surprised when a cat jumps into your lap...it lives here, you are just a guest.

Hofman is een café gelegen aan het Janskerkhof. Daar waar in 1888 nog 400 kinderen in de schoolbanken zaten, kun je in dit monumentale pand nu terecht voor lunch, diner en borrel. Naast eten en drinken heeft Hofman een veelzijdig programma met op verschillende dagen live muziek optredens, dj’s, dansen, comedy-optredens, litereaire bijeenkomsten, etc. Voor ieder wat wils. In de zomer staat er een groot terras voor de deur. Hofman heeft een zeer uitgebreid bierassortiment.

Hofman is a café located on Janskerkhof. Where in 1888 over 400 children were sitting behind school desks, you can now visit this monumental building for lunch, dinner and drinks. In addition to food and drink, Hofman has a versatile program with live music performances, DJ's, dances, comedy performances, literary meetings, etc. In the summer there is a large outside seating area in front of the building. Hofman has a pretty extensive range of beers.

In Café Tilt! kun je donderdagavond t/m zaterdagavond terecht voor muziek van diverse DJ's. Houd je meer van jazz dan kun je op zondagavond terecht voor live muziek. Op andere momenten kun je natuurlijk ook terecht voor een biertje op het terras, lunch of iets anders in dit mooi gelegen café.

In this bar you can enjoy DJ's on Thursday night until Saturday night. If you are more into jazz you can enjoy this live on Sunday evening. Other times you can of course also enjoy a beer on the terrace, enjoy lunch or something else on this nicely located pub.

Je zou het misschien op het eerste gezicht niet zeggen maar er bestaat al een café-restaurant sinds 1908 op deze prominente plaats aan het Lucasbolwerk. Het café groeit in de jaren dertig uit tot een literair trefpunt. Het pand is gebouwd in 1840 en draagt de naam 'Flora' (ook de eerste naam van het café-restaurant). Op de mooie gevelsteen is de godin 'Flora' ook afgebeeld. In de loop der tijd hebben er veel verschillende café’s gezeten: studentencafé Heerenplein, Koevoet, bar-restaurant Vinnies. Nu heeft Villa Orloff zijn deuren geopend. Ze richten zich op een iets ouder publiek en het zal voornamelijk om de borrel draaien overdag en in de avond.

Maybe you wouldn't guess that a pub/restaurant has been on this prominent spot on the Lucasbolwerk since 1908. The pub grew up to become a literary venue in the 1930's. The building itself was built in 1840 and carries the name 'Flora' (also the first name of the pub/restaurant). The goddess 'Flora' is also depicted on the nice gable stone. Over the years many different cafes have been set up here like student pub Heerenplein, Koevoet and bar-restaurant Vinnies. Now Villa Orloff has opened its doors. Sinds 1999 zit hier Café Rex. Je treft het café niet altijd open, zeker niet overdag maar ze zeggen zelf dat ze flexibele openingstijden hebben. De keuken is open op woensdag, donderdag en vrijdag met niet al te hoge prijzen. Een prima plek om een borrel te organiseren of gewoon 's avonds een biertje te drinken.

Since 1999 you can find Café Rex here. You will not find this bar open a lot, at least not during daytime but they will tell you they have flexible opening hours. The kitchen is open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with low prices. A fine place to organise a small party or just to drink a beer at night.

Een Ierse pub met een open uitstraling door de raampartijen, hoewel het geen keten meer is vind je gelijknamige Firkin pub-vestingen overal op de wereld. Zoals het een pub betaamt zijn er pub quizes en kan je er goed eten. Helaas brouwen ze hun eigen bier niet meer, maar hier is gelukkig nog wel Kilkenny! Nog steeds wordt er elke zaterdag Spijkers met Koppen opgenomen in Florin, rechtstreeks uitgezonden op Radio 2.

Deze Irish Pub heeft in 2012 weer een metamorfose ondergaan en is nu een nog nettere pub geworden. De eigenaar is Iers en zorgt meestal ook altijd voor Iers of Brits personeel. Er zijn altijd wel mensen te vinden in de pub voor een goed gesprek, een potje pool of darts of een voetbalwedstrijd te kijken. Zoals in elke pub kun je hier ook goed eten, maar kun je ook terecht voor pub quizen. Ze hebben de Ierse bieren Guinness en Murphy's op de tap en ook een bier van de maand.

This Irish pub had another makeover in 2012 and has become an even tidier pub. The owner is Irish en usually has Irish or British people on staff. You can always find people that come here for a good conversation, a game of pool or darts or to watch a football game. As is the case in most pubs you can also get good food here, but you can also join one of the pubquizes. They have Irish draft beers Guinness and Murphy's and also have a beer of the month.

Nieuwe Dikke Dries is een gezellig café met een klein terras aan de straatzijde. Als huisspecialiteit serveren ze een huisgemaakte bal gehakt op stokbrood. Er vinden regelmatig muziekavonden en live optredens plaats. Zo is het op donderdag studentenavond met een DJ, op vrijdag "We Love Fridays" met de beste muziek uit de jaren '70, '80 en '90 en op zaterdag "100% Dikke Dries".
