The synagogue of Györ is a very impressive building and I think it deserves a cache. The cache itself is hidden not directly at the synagogue. It found its place in the back nearby a childrens play ground.
History of the synagogue
Károly Benkó designed the synagogue of Györ in a neoromantic style with an octagonal layout at the Györ island between 1868 and 1870. The Jewish community in Györ inaugurated their elementary school in 1868, then in September 1870 the synagogue was consecrated in Sziget also. It became a model for synagogues in other cities. Some decades later the Jewish community was deported during the World War II. The synagogue was blessed again in the spring of 1946, but the Congregation couldn’t maintain the building any more and it started to decay. In 1968 the city bought the building. A part of the building was used as an office by a grain company and as a furniture store by the city council for a while. In 1973 the local department of Liszt Ferenc College of Musical Art moved in and higher education musical studies began in the right wing of the building, then in 1990 in its left wing. At that time, the leaders of the city were planning to establish a cultural centre and a concert hall for the college, in the former liturgical space. Some decades later the idea was realized during the renovation of the wing of the school and its original function was put back in place. The Jewish congregation and the tabernacle could continue their operation next to the college in the building. The interior main room with its arc balconies and its dome gives every visitor an overwhelming sight again.
The Vasilescu Collection and the collection of Ország Lili’s paintings, which cover her whole career, were placed in the synagogue. It opens its doors from Wednesday till Sunday from 10:00 till 18:00 o’clock. To enter the synagogue you have to pay an entrance fee.
