Vor etwa 250 Millionen Jahren begann die Ablagerung der Buntsandstein-Schichten in einem Wüstengebiet welches sich über weite Erdteile erstreckte. Im laufe der Zeit zerbrachen die festen Gesteinsbänke. Niederschlag versickerte in den entstandenen Rissen. Das Wasser sammelte sich in den natürlichen Poren des Sandstein.

Als Grundwasser fliesen diese Ansammlungen bis sie von undurchlässigen Schichten gestaut werden. In der Nähe solcher Orte kann das Wasser als Quelle wieder an die Oberfläche kommen.

Durch die Einflüsse der Umwelt, unterliegen freigelegte Buntsandstein-Felsen einem geologischem Stoffkreislauf. Die mit der Zeit fest gewordenen Verbindungen zwischen den Sandkörnern wurden gelöst. Dadurch konnten Wind und Regen, Bereiche abtragen und der lose Sand bis in einen See oder ins Meer transportiert werden. Dort kann er wieder zu einem Sandstein verfestigt werden. Seit Jahrmillionen prägt dieser ewige Kreislauf die Oberflächengestaltung der Erde.
