Der am nordöstlichen Stadtrand von Büdingen gelegenen stillgelegte
Sandsteinbruch ist ein besonderer Ort: hier schlugen Steinmetze den
Block aus der Wand, aus dem der Keltenfürst vom Glauberg
hergestellt wurde. Eine Schautafel am Steinbruch erinnert heute an
diese Begebenheit. Der hier anstehende Untere Buntsandstein ist
nicht vulkanischen Ursprungs, doch zeigt er eindrucksvoll den
Untergrund des Vulkangebietes Vogelsberg. Der Sandstein ist von
heller, rötlich-brauner Farbe, mit feinkörniger Struktur und
schwach tonig. Der Steinbruch war bis kurz nach dem 2. Weltkrieg in
Betrieb. Zahlreiche Gebäude in Büdingen sind aus diesem Material
gebaut, u.a. auch das Büdinger Schloß der Fürsten von Isenburg.
The on the northeastern outskirts of Büdingen lying
inoperative sand quarry is a special place: here stonemasons carved
the block from the wall, from which the Celtic prince of the
Glauberg was built. Today a presentation board at the quarry
remembers this incident. Here the upcoming lower red sandstone is
not of volcanic origin, but it shows a striking example of the
underground area of the volcano Vogelsberg. The sandstone is a
light reddish-brown color, with fine-grained structure and weakly
clayey. Until shortly after World War II the quarry was in
operation. Numerous buildings in Büdingen are built from this
material, including Büdingen’s castle of the princes of
Isenburg.
