Buntsandstein Steinbrüche Wangen
Buntsandstein entstand in einer Periode (ca. 10 Millionen Jahre) zu Anfang des Erdmittelalters (Mesozonikum). Nach dem Rückzug des Zechsteinmeeres blieb eine flache, vom Weltmeer nahezu vollständig abgeriegelte, Sedimentpfanne zurück. In dieses Becken wurden in der Zeit des Unteren und Mittleren Buntsandsteins vom Süden und Norden klastische Sedimente geschüttet. Im Oberen Buntsandstein (Röt) entstand ein periodischer Wechsel zwischen Fluss- bzw. Seen-Sedimenten und Meeres-Sedimenten (Rötgips).
Zur Zeit des Unteren Buntsandsteins bildete sich im Zentrum Mitteleuropas von der Ostküste Englands bis östlich von Warschau eine große flache Binnensenke. Sie war rundum von Höhenrücken umgeben, von denen die Sedimente durch Erosion abgetragen wurden. Flüsse setzten ihre Sedimentfracht innerhalb des Germanischen Beckens ab und verlagerten dabei ständig ihren Lauf.
Was zeigt uns die Schichtung des Sediments? In der Schichtung wird uns die Art und Weise des Transports der Sedimentkörner überliefert. Man unterscheidet Horizontal- und Schrägschichtung. Die Grundeinheiten der Schichtung sind die stofflich homogenen Einzelschichten. Die Schichtungstypen enthalten Hinweise auf das Ablagerungsmilieu. Schrägschichtung und Rippelschichtung geben Hinweise auf fließendes Wasser. Ebene oder wellige Horizontalschichtung sind Anzeichen für ruhiges Wasser, wie es z.B. im Überflutungsbereich von Flüssen vorkommt. Flaserschichtung entsteht durch pulsierende Strömungen in flachen Becken z.b. im Wattmeer.

New red sandstone quarry Wangen
New, red sandstone was formed about ten million years ago at the beginning of the Mesozoic period. As the "Zechsteinmeer" shrank, a flat sediment plate was revealed. In this basin, from north to south, clastic sediment settled during the early and middle period when new sandstone layers were formed. In the upper layer of the new red sandstone (Roet), you can find alternating sediment layers representing rivers, lakes, and the sea (Roetgips).
In the center of Europe, a great, flat, inland dip was formed, which stretched from the east coast of England in the west to the outskirts of present day Warsaw in the east. The dip is surrounded by a mountain ridge where the sediments have been revealed by erosion. Rivers, which deposited sediment in the German part of the basin, changed their course over time.
What do the sediment beds show us?
The sediment bed reveals the different ways that the sediment particles were transported. It is possible to differentiate between horizontal and angled/vertical sediment beds. The base represents substantial, homogeneous, single layers. The different types of layers contain hints about the environment in which they were formed.
Angular beds and ripple marks are signs of flowing water. Planar or bumpy horizontal layers are signs of standing water such as river flood lands. Unconformable formed, isolated, thin beds are created by pulsating tides inside a flat basin or by the tideland. (Flaserschichtung)
