Humble’s Artesian Well
I grew up in Humble, Texas. As a youth, I would pass by this constant flow of water near the corner of 1960 and Old River Road. For almost one hundred years, water has been flowing from the artesian well at this site. In 1912, a German immigrant, Nick Lambrecht, accidentally tapped into the water source and he was soon supplying water to homes and the local bath houses. His good fortune led to wealth and even a stint as mayor of Humble.
The following diagram shows how the artesian well works. Basically the water in an aquifer (underground pool of water) is pushed out of the ground by the force of the water above it. When there is more water above the artesian well, more force pushes water out of the hole. During dryer times, the force of the pushing water lessens. If the water table (the top level of water) sinks below the artesian well, the flow of water will stop. .
Permission to proceed with this cache was granted by the city manager of Humble, Texas. There are two questions to be answered in this Earth cache. The first objective of this Earth cache is to estimate how many gallons of water passes through the artesian well per minute. The second question is, “What the Mr. Lambrecht really drilling for?” Email the answers to teamCull. Please do not post any answers, encrypted or otherwise, in your log.
