Geocache Description:

Please use parking coordinates provided. The "closer" way to get to the cache is by houses and I don't want geocachers to bother the neighbors. Thank you! When it rains, puddles will form at the beginning of the path and it will be a water crossing. There are some trees down, but there are obvious paths around or under them.

All information found here is from personal knowledge and the book "Chester Revisited". At the time that the Chester Turnpike was built in 1805, it ran through the present towns of Chester, Auburn, Hooksett, Allenstown, Pembroke, and Concord. The Chester Turnpike was a toll road and ran just over 14 miles and saved the traveler 2 miles. At the beginning, Chester Turnpike was a thriving economy boost to Chester. But as canals and railroads became more popular, very little traffic traveled the turnpike. In 1838, the State of New Hampshire closed the toll and made the turnpike a free road. In 1978, Chester closed a portion on the road from Candia Road to Auburn town line. This section of Chester Turnpike that the cache located is a small section between Chester Street and Candia Road. The major section that Chester closed is across Candia Road and about 1/4 mile down Old Chester Turnpike. Old Chester Turnpike is now used as a nature trail, snowmobile trail in the winter and 4 wheelers LOVE it in the spring/summer/fall. There are other trails down there, but I have never had a chance to explore all of them. Near the cache, there is the remains of a foundation of some building. Look, but don't go too close.
