Lagoa das Sete Cidades

Segundo as datações rádicronológicas, a caldeira formou-se há 22.000 anos, a seguir à emissão de pedras-pomes de natureza igualmente traquiticas. A erupção foi acompanhada de uma coluna de cinza com muitos Km de altura e de nuvens ardentes. Esta erupção relativamente recente permite compreender os vulcões mais antigos que apresentam uma caldeira. Deram-se uma série de erupções no exterior e interior. A primeira erupção pós-caldeira deu-se há 17.160 anos, com um grupo de explosões traquiticas sobre o flanco externo oeste.

Após uma fase de repouso de cerca de 10.000 anos estes aparelhos vulcânicos entraram em actividade no fundo da caldeira. Pode-se distinguir a partir de norte para sul e no sentido contrário dos ponteiros do relógio: Seara (5.000 B.P.), Caldeira do Alferes (4.000 B.P.) Caldeira Seca (em 1.444 B.P.). O cone de escórias de Cerrado das Freiras situado a este do Lago Azul ter-se-á formado em 1444.

A Lagoa das Sete Cidades, situada na maravilhosa Ilha de São Miguel, é um dos mais famosos locais do Arquipélago dos Açores, e uma vez observada entende-se o porquê.

Este é o maior lago de água doce dos Açores, situado nas crateras vulcânicas que formam a Ilha, sendo constituído por duas lagoas (a Lagoa Verde e a Lagoa Azul) que aqui promovem um cenário de beleza extrema e indescritível, e uma das imagens simbólicas de todo o Arquipélago, classificada como Paisagem Protegida da Rede Natura 2000.

A Lagoa, cuja profundidade máxima atinge os 33 metros, e o comprimento máximo de 4,2 quilómetros, está rodeada de verdejantes campos de cultivo, emoldurada por belíssimas encostas escarpadas que lhe conferem um ambiente bucólico e idílico sem igual.

Associada a tão belo local estão algumas lendas, sendo a mais famosa a da Princesa dos olhos azuis.

Sete Cidades Lagoon

The age of the Sete Cidades is probably very important. According to the radiocronological datings, the caldera was formed 22 000 years ago. The eruption was accompanied by a column of ash several kilometers high with clouds and burning. This relatively recent rash can help understand  older volcanoes who also have a caldera, but are more difficult to understand. There are a series of eruptions in the interior and exterior. The first post-caldera eruption took place 17.160 years ago with a group of trachytic explosions on the west outside side.

The Sete Cidades Lagoon, situated in the wonderful São Miguel Island, is one of the most famous places in the Azores Archipelago, and once you visit you'll understand why.

This is the biggest fresh-water lake in the Azores, situated in the volcanic craters that form the Island, constituted by two lagoons (the Green Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon) that form a wonderful scenery of great natural beauty, one of the symbolic images of the Archipelago, classified as Protected Landscape.

The Lagoon has a maximum profundity of 33 meters and a length of 4,2km, surrounded by greenish agricultural and wild fields, surrounded by beautiful rocky cliffs that offer an unique bucolic beautiful environment.

Associated to this beautiful sight are some legends, the most famous one is the Blue Eye Princess Legend.

No local onde hoje se situa a bonita freguesia das Sete Cidades, existia um reino, onde habitava a bela e jovem Princesa Antília, de lindos olhos azuis. Certo dia, num passeio pelos prados maravilhosos da região, a Princesa apaixona-se por um Pastor de olhos verdes, que por ali passeava o seu rebanho.

Dias passaram, e em todos eles os dois apaixonados se encontraram no mesmo local, à sombra de uma velha árvore, cada vez mais próximos e apaixonados.

O Rei, que desejava a sua filha casada com um Principe do reino vizinho, ao tomar conhecimento da paixão que crescia, proibiu o amor da Princesa e do Pastor. Desesperada, Antília pediu o seu último encontro com o seu amor, que aconteceu no local habitual.

Enquanto falavam o seu triste destino, os dois choraram em tamanha quantidade que, dos olhos azuis da Princesa se formou a Lagoa Azul, e dos olhos verdes do Pastor, se formou a Lagoa Verde.

Conta então a lenda, que os dois foram separados, mas as suas sentidas lágrimas para sempre ficaram lado a lado, na Lagoa das Sete Cidades.

In the place where nowadays is situated the beautiful small village of Sete Cidades, once was a kingdom where the lovely blue eye Princess Antília lived. One day, on a stroll by the wonderful greenish fields of the region, the Princess falls in love by a green eye shepherd that played a flute and walked its flock of sheep.

Days passed and in all of them the beloved yougsters met under the same old tree where they met, every time falling more and more in love.

The King, who desired his daughter married to a Prince from a neighbour kingdom, discovers their love and soon forbids it. Desperate, the Princess Antília begs for a last encounter, which happened in the usual place.

As both the Princess and the Shepherd talked about their forbidden love, they cried and cried, in such despondency that from the tears they dropped two lagoon were formed: from the blue eyes of the Princess the Blue Lagoon, from the green Shepherd's eyes the Green Lagoon were formed.

Hence, the lovers were sent apart, yet their tears forever got side by side, in the Sete Cidades Lagoon.
