The following bit of history of the area comes from the archived
cache “Old Notown Village” (GCM3GC)
The land of “Notown Village” consisted of 4,882 acres, which was
divided and given to several living veterans and the heirs of
soldiers killed in the French, Indian and the revolutionary wars.
They cut the forests, made fields for farming, dug wells, erected
stone walls and built homes. The settlers had no form of local
government and paid no local taxes.
As the years passed they petitioned Leominster, Westminster and
Princeton to see if any of these larger towns would include them in
their jurisdiction. All three towns denied their request, as they
were just too far out in the wilderness. Since no other town wanted
them, they decided to call themselves “Notown”.
It is no longer a populated area, the last settlers left the
area in 1850. Ironically the land was divided between the towns of
Leominster, Westminster and Princeton. If you look as you are
walking you may see some of the old granite foundations and the
stone walls that formed boundary lines.
We would like to thank Leominster Recreation Department for
their assistance on the hide and for allowing us to place this
cache on the property.
