New York is slowly cleaning up its waterfront and this recently opened area of the Hudson River Greenway is a great example of how they are preserving some of the old while adding new amenities.

Many, many years ago, back when there was still lots of manufacturing going on on the West side of Manhattan, manufacturers would receive their raw materials by trains that came across the Hudson on special barges. The train cars would roll on to the barges in, say, New Jersey, and then roll off the barges at any one of several different spots in Manhattan.

This spot was one of them. The floating pier has been restored with the tracks intact. If you follow the tracks into the river you will find your self boarding a barge. Alongside the barge is the Frying Pan, a light ship that has a long history of its own. If you are there at the right time you might even be able to board and take a tour of the Frying Pan. Also alongside the barge is the John Harvey, a retired fireboat. More information on both can be found here: (visit link) and here: (visit link)

The cache is a soda bottle "blank.," what a soda bottle is before it grows up into a real bottle. It holds a rolled up log scroll, a small pencil and rainbow Z sock for the FTF.

May need tweezers to remove log.

Tried to find it but no luck. It was dark though so maybe I need daylight for my next attempt.

#2/12 found today while in NYC for business. Came over here from Where To Sit and was surprised by what I saw! If it wasn't for this cache I would never have found this place. Nice. I really enjoyed looking at all the old wood and metal. The wheels were the best. The cache was a little head scratcher but once in the correct section, it was a good find. Unfortunately the log was stuck deep inside... I tried to shoot it out and it finally gave free, but I fumbled mid-air and it fell to the water below. Doh! So sorry. Luckily I had a business card on me so I used that and folded it into a new log. Should be okay for a little while now. Thanks for the cache, and the experience!

A very fun find, and thank you for steering us to such a wonderful place! Left a Canadian coin in honor of the Olympics.
