PLEASE NOTE: A condition of placing this cache here is that the church leaders have asked that no searching be done on Sunday mornings Mid-June to Mid-September. The congregation holds their Sunday services here in the summer. Thank you for being respectful of their wishes.
The Old Stone Church in Lanesborough is a significant landmark to visitors and residents. It is the summer service location for the congregation from St. Luke's Episcopal Church which has been worshiping as an organized group since 1767. The first building was constructed on the site in 1784. The stone church was constructed in 1836 for less than $4,000 which was a fair amount of money back then. It has a Johnson Organ which is operated through the use of hand-pumped bellows. The stained-glass windows were a later addition. The one on the north side was crafted by local artisans with glass from Berkshire Glass Works. The carriage steps on either side of the church allowed worshipers to alight from the farm wagons easily. The church has gone through several periods of renovation. The most recent was a rebuild of the bell tower in 2000.
Thanks to my Aunt Sharon for the above description. :)
