Geocache Description:

South Wales Mountain Cache Challenge 17 is number seventeen in a series of thirty caches that have been placed in the South Wales mountains.

The South Wales Mountain Cache Challenge has thirty caches placed in various parts of the upland areas of the Principality. A mountain is defined as being at least 2000 feet high, but here in Wales, we like to call some of higher hills mountains as well, and so several of the caches have been placed in areas that I perceive to be beautiful, but do not fall within the definition of a mountain!
Please also understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and is an entirely subjective view!
Many of the caches have been placed in the mountains within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

SWMCC 17 has been placed on a favourite moor of mine, Llangynidir Moor.

This is a historic moor.

In the early 19th century, the Chartists were determined to force the government of the day to agree to electoral reform, much of which now is the basis of our electoral system. The government had previously held meetings with the leaders of the Chartist movement, but frustratingly for the Chartists, they saw little movement on the government's position.

So, In November 1839, Chartist leader John Frost and his allies planned to march in three columns on Newport under cover of darkness to fight government troops.

Early in the morning of Monday 4 November 1839. Frost led the western column, Zepheniah Williams the central column, and William Jones the eastern column.

Many of the Chartists' arms were manufactured and stored at a cave in the middle of Llangynidir Moor. The cache is a short walk from the cave.

The Chartists' were defeated at the Westgate Hotel, Newport. Their cause had been defeated, and the leaders eventually tried for treason. Many were sent to Australia.
