There is fungus all among us!
Although often inconspicuous, fungi occur in every environment on Earth and play very important roles in most ecosystems. Along with bacteria, fungi are the major decomposers in most terrestrial (and some aquatic) ecosystems, and therefore play a critical role in biogeochemical cycles and in many food webs. As decomposers, they play an indispensable role in nutrient cycling, especially as saprotrophs and symbionts, degrading organic matter to inorganic molecules, which can then re-enter anabolic metabolic pathways in plants or other organisms. Some individual fungal colonies can grow to a very large size and mass, in some cases reaching extraordinary dimensions and ages as in the case of a clonal colony of Armillaria ostoyae, which extends over an area of more than 900ha, with an estimated age of nearly 9,000 years. (thank you, wikipedia...)
This particular fungi is enjoying a symbiotic relationship with the surrounding thorny blackberry bushes which keep muggles away. Thank the berry vines (as you curse them for poking you on your way to the cache), and pick some of their fruit if it's in season. They made it tasty especially for you, to entice you to spread their seeds.
Please be gentle with the lid and don't screw it on too tightly.
CONGRATS to geojerry7 for the FTF!
