Geocache Description:

A traditional cache on Holy Island.

The site where the cache is placed is called Greenshiel and dates back to the 9th Century as an Anglo-Saxon settlement. However, the village that was here was destroyed by the Viking Invasions. There are ruins of 5 buildings here. Animal bone has been found in all the buildings, and in some complete cattle skeletons have been found. It is possible that some of the buildings were used as barns or animal shelters. Other objects found (which can be viewed in the English Heritage museum on the Island) include a spearhead, fragments of bone combs, iron knives and Anglo-Saxon coins. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.

The Island itself is managed by Natural England who has kindly given permission for the cache to be placed. They do ask that you observe a few simple rules when visiting:
- Please only use the obvious paths.
- Inspect your clothes, etc. at the end of your visit for any Piri-Piri burr. This plant is not native to the area and is beginning to spread around Northumberland. It can have devastating effects upon the dune system and other areas. Please dispose any of this safely.
- Do not interfere with the village remains.

The CITO element of this cache is that the North Shore of Holy Island, very close to the cache location, gets very cluttered with detritus that washes up from Berwick and further afield. Inside the cache you will find some bin bags. Please feel free to fill a bag with any rubbish on the shore (and island generally) and place the sealed bag at N 55:41.189 W 001:48.537 (NU 12110 43684) where Natural England will collect it and dispose of it correctly. Be careful what you pick up, do not touch anything which may cause you injury or ill health.

Please park in the designated car parks.
