Geocache Description:

Cooney Mountain Lookout was first built as a 20 ft. L-4 tower built in 1933. The present 30 ft. treated timber tower with R-6 flat cab was built in 1968. The lookout is on USFS land.

To get to lookout, turn East off Hwy 83 (mm 40.2) onto Rumble Creek Road. Be sure to turn left at 90-degree corner 1.0 mile off Hwy (instead of straight up private driveway). Take 90-degree right corner another 0.5 mile further and then just keep on main traveled road to lookout, which is 3.5 road miles from Hwy 83. Please respect private property that is posted in the area and stay on the road.

From the ground or from the stair landing below the lookout catwalk, there are beautiful majestic views of the Swan Valley, the Mission Mountain Range on the West side of the valley, and some views of the Swan Mountains behind the lookout on the East side of the valley. Beautiful location for photos and a picnic.

Across the valley to the west (Kraft Cr. area) you can see the burnt timber of the 2003 Crazy Horse Fire. On the mountainside to the southeast of the lookout, you can see the burnt timber of the 2006 Holland Peak Fire.

(Drive another 0.2 mile beyond the lookout and you will be at the USFS East Foothills Trail trailhead. If you enjoy a hike, this nice trail will take you across the foothills to the south to Holland).

The cache is an old military 'decon' container which can hold small trade items, a short distance from lookout tower.
