Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Vermont 251 Plus 4 Geocaching Club, an attempt to bring caches to each and every town, city and gore in the state of Vermont!

Wilmington is the town I grew up in, and when I saw that there was no “This Is Vermont” cache here I thought it should have one. Enjoy!

Windham County
Chartered: April 29, 1751 (New Hampshire Grant)
Area: 27,174 Acres = 42.46 Square Miles
Altitude: 1,580 feet ASL
Population (US Census, 2000): 2,225
Population Density (persons per square mile): 52.4

In the original grant of April 29, 1751, the town was named for Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was largely responsible for Benning Wentworth's 1741 appointment as Governor of New Hampshire. The town was not settled within the required five-year period, and was re-granted to an entirely different group on June 17, 1763 and named Draper, in honor of either or both John and Richard Draper, the famous Boston printers, father and son.
People who settled there apparently didn't like the name, establishing a practice of using the original name very early on. Vermont place names being a rather casual matter in the early days, no official action was ever taken, and the present name is more a matter of custom and usage rather than law.

CACHE INFO: The cache is located on Lisle Hill, at the spot where the town was first settled. It is now a nice little park almost at the top of the hill. You can check out the new hiking trail just up the road, or just have a picnic and enjoy the scenery.

From Wilmington center, head north and take your first right. Its only ½ mile up the hill, but it's steep. Be glad you can drive!
