Big Basin Redwoods State Park gets many visitors, but most seem to flock to the areas with the Redwoods or the trail to the falls, while this upper area seems to be largely ignored. And the Skyline to the Sea Trail is pretty well known, but the section between Waterman Gap and the Big Basin H.Q. has only had one cache. I set out to add some more to this fine trail.
The day I hid this cache my hike was a loop from China Grade, down to the Hollow Tree Trail, up to the Basin Trail and back, a hike I highly recommend. (Total distance, about ten miles.) There is quite a variety of flora, fauna, terrain and scenery on this hike. This cache is along a section which is primarily chaparral. In this place a large rock surface is exposed, which I found fascinating.
It is also a good place to catch some sun, if you're so inclined. On a hike some years ago, my friends and I made our way up this rock for a place to have lunch and take in the view. I hope you will enjoy it as well.
The cache is a small camo painted rubbermaid container.
