The Legend of Saint Giorgio’s Pass
This very impressive ravine was recognized as a Natural Monument of Sardinia on the 18th January, 1994, for its extraordinary beauty and the ravine that is flanked by a steep vertical wall.
“Su Casteddui” (means Castle) is the highest peak, and there is a panoramic point from where it is possible to admire the old town centre and the valley of Rio Pardu. To reach the viewing point, there is a short climb up the side of the rocks, approximately 100 steps.
Osini’s religious story is tied to the saint. Saint Giorgio was born in Cagliari at the end of the 10h century and he died in 1045 or 1050. He was an important bishop and it was thought he had healing powers. He worked 17 miracles, 10 during his life time and 7 after his death.
The Legend:
One day the bishop was visiting his dioceses territory when he arrived at the foot of the mountain. To continue his walk he would have had either to climb over it, which would have been difficult with many dangers. Having in mind, the travellers with him, he prayed to God, following which by a miracle, a passage opened that made the journey shorter and easier, also he made a spring of fresh water flow, which would have further eased the traveller’s hardships.
This passage is known as “Scale di San Giorgio” in honour of this saint and in remembrance of this miracle.
Every year Saint Giorgio is visited by pilgrims, the bishop conducts an open air mass and afterwards they start their journey from Saint Giorgio and it ends at the Cathedral in Seoul.

La Scala (o Passo) di San Giorgio è un' area protetta istituita Monumento Naturale nel 1994
Il Passo di San Giorgio è caratterizzato da diverse fratture delle masse rocciose una delle quali, nota con il nome di “Sa Brecca ‘e Usala”, sprofonda per quasi 100 metri.
La punta più alta (900 m s.l.m. circa) che sovrasta la Scala di San Giorgio, chiamata “S’assa e su casteddu” (parete del castello), costituisce uno spettacolare punto panoramico da cui è possibile ammirare la Vallata del Rio Pardu, nonché il vecchio centro abitato di Osini, abbandonato in seguito all’alluvione del 1951.
La sua denominazione ha indotto, per molto tempo, a ritenere che vi fosse ubicato un castello di età medievale, oggi, tuttavia, sulla base del ritrovamento di numerosi materiali (ceramica e monete romane) ascrivibili ad età romano-bizantina, la maggior parte degli studiosi propende per ipotizzarvi la sede di una postazione m La storia religiosa del paese di Osini è legata alla figura di San Giorgio Vescovo.
Come attestato dalla prima fonte agiografica (Legenda Sanctissimi Georgii Presulis Suellinsis) scritta da Paolo nel 1117, la Gola sarebbe stata aperta da un miracolo del Vescovo San Giorgio, primo titolare dell’antica Diocesi di Suelli.
In occasione di una visita pastorale a Osini, giunto ai piedi di un monte impenetrabile, pensando soprattutto ai disagi dei poveri viaggiatori, elevò una preghiera a Dio e miracolosamente nel monte si aprì uno stretto varco che rendeva più breve e facile il cammino. Il varco prese simbolicamente il suo nome per ricordarne il passaggio: la “Scala di San Giorgio”.
