Timber played a big part in the history of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Redwood trees were the primary crop. There are many large redwood "fairy rings" along the trail - clusters of clonal redwoods that have grown up around a logged or naturally deceased mother tree. Sequoia sempervirens - "ever green" and amazing trees.
It's a 4.8 mile one-way walk between the Kings Mountain Road and Wunderlich Park trail access points, with some gentle elevation changes at either end. The walk is almost all shaded and cool, and goes through a lot of diverse areas - second-growth redwoods and huckleberries, oak and madrone woodlands, chaparral, and Douglas fir forests. The trail runs through a fenced easement in the California Water Company's Bear Gulch Watershed, and the fence is mostly unnoticeable. This segment was dedicated as part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail in 1989, the first year that the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council began dedicating segments. There is a newer access point to the Bay Area Ridge Trail from Skyline Blvd parking at Molder Trail intersection.
You don't need to rip apart the tree at this site. Stay on the trail and inspect gently and the cache will be yours. GPSr reception could be a problem here, so use the hint!
