V starovekom Grecku, Macedonsku, Bulharsku, moslimskych krajinách Stredneho Vychodu a Maroku verili, ze bociany su prevteleni mrtvi alebo ludia prechadzajuci zvlastnou transformaciou. Grecky filozof Pytagoras (572-497 BC) tvrdil, ze bociany stelesnuju duse mrtvych basnikov, zatial co historik Plutarch (45-125 AD) zaznamenal pripad muza odsudeneho na smrt v Tesalonikach za zabitie bociana, zrejme z dovodu, ze sa verilo ze bocian je ciastocne ludsky.
Obyvatelia roznych casti Europy povazovali bociany za vtaky prinasajuce stastie a bohatstvo. V holandstine napriklad bocian – ooievaar – pochadza zo staronemeckeho odobero – prinasat stastie (ode – stastie, baren – prinasat).
Bociany prilietaju do nasich koncin na jar v marci a odlietaju v auguste az v septembri. Bocian je stahovavy vtak schopny preletiet obrovske vzdialenosti. Dokonalu orientaciu mu umoznuje jeho schopnost vnimat elektromagneticke ziarenie. Nikdy by sa nezahniezdil na dome postavenom v mieste zvysenej radiacie. Svojou volbou pre stavbu hniezda pre 4-5 vajec ukazuje, ze obydlie je v poriadku a mozno cakat vela zdravych deti :-). Tak vznikla viera, ze bocian nosi deti a nie je to uplne naivna ludova povera.

Greek philosopher Pythagoras (572-497 BC) claimed that storks impersonate the souls of dead poets, while the historian Plutarch (45-125 AD) recorded the case of a man sentenced to death in Thessaly for killing a stork. This could be linked with the belief that stork is partly human.
Inhabitants of different parts of Europe used to find stork a bird which brings luck, prosperity. For example, the Dutch name of the stork – ooievaar – comes from old German odobero – bringing luck (ode – luck, baren – bring).
Storks are flying into our region in the spring in March and flying away around August to September. As storks are migrating birds, they have special skills which enable them to fly safely to long distances. That is possible also due to the fact that the bird can sense electromagnetic radiation. A stork would never nest on a house which is in a place with higher radiation. By choosing a nest for 4-5 eggs the stork shows, that the place is fine and people can expect healthy children :-). That is how the belief in the stork bringing babies was created and it is not a simple naïve folk superstition.
