This cache is part of my "Summer Splash" series considering the rain we've had so far. The Lupine wildflower adds so much beauty at this time of year!
There are over 100 species of Lupins in North America, belonging to the genus (Lupinus). Most grow in poor soils, enriching it in the process, for they trap nitrogen with their root nodules. The common Lupine in the White mountains is the Garden Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus). The pea shaped flowers appear in vertical spike-like columns over sets of 11 to 17 leaflets. The wild Lupin, (L.perennis) is a rare species and is considered threatened in New Hampshire and should not be disturbed because it is the sole host of the endangered Blue Karner Butterfly.
The Lupine are still blooming across the road from the cache in this valley. The cache is located at one of the Saco Lake Trail Heads. It is close to the opening. As always, step lightly while caching no matter where you are.
