GONÇALO VAZ BOTELHO: - "o Grande", fundador da Vila Franca do Campo, no ano de 1444, em São Miguel nos Açores, que para alí foi por ordem do Infante Dom Henrique, para povoar a dita ilha. Foi comendador da Ordem de Cristo. Vila Franca do campo foi durante o primeiro século de povoamento a mais importante povoação da ilha de São Miguel, nela se fixando o capitão do donatário e as principais instituições da ilha (alfândega, ouvidoria), pelo que merece o epíteto de primeira capital micaelense. GONÇALO VAZ BOTELHO - "the Great”, founder of Vila Franca do Campo, in the year 1444, in São Miguel in the Azores. He was sent there by the order of the Infante Dom Henrique, to populate the island. He was Commander of the Order of Christ. Vila Franca do Campo was during the first century the most important town of the island of São Miguel, it set the ‘capitão do donatário’ (in charge of the island) and the island's main institutions (customs, etc), therefore deserving the title of the first capital of the island.
