Rustler Peak Lookout is located on the Rogue River National
Forest. A regular crow’s nest or pole platform was
constructed on the peak in 1917 followed by a cupola style cabin in
the 1920's. The present structure, a 30' wooden tower with a 14' x
14' cabin was constructed in 1948. it has been staffed every fire
season.
The fire lookout attendant, Brenda, will be happy to give you a
tour - but do not disturb her before 10:00am! She
is up very late watching for fires, and needs her sleep!!
The geocache is an ammo can filled with trade items located at
the peak only a few feet off the road. It is best to call the Butte
Falls Ranger Station at 541-865-2700 to see if the gate is
unlocked. If it is closed, it is almost a mile hike to the lookout,
thus the terrain rating. If it is open, that last mile is rough and
rocky, but passable by high clearance vehicles.
