My home schooled niece got to go on a long road trip to visit
some great places throughout the U.S. with my sister and her
husband. Along the way she sent postcards to me, her Aunt
Kelley.
Week 1
Dear Kelley!
I just got to sit and have my photo taken on the Crazy Bull statue!
It was amazing, and mom and dad took me to go and see all the faces
of the presidents in that rock. It was pretty cool too!! I’ll
send you the photos in the mail along with your postcard.
Week 2
Dear Kelley!
You aren't going to believe this, but in Hartford, you may not,
under any circumstances, cross the street walking on your hands!
Really! I'm not making it up!
Week 3
Dear Kelley!
I went to a state park today to learn all about endangered species
in this state. Did you know that The karner blue butterfly, lynx,
bald eagle, short nose sturgeon, Sunapee trout, Atlantic salmon and
dwarf wedge mussel are on the State's endangered species list?? I
hope we can find ways to protect them!
Week 4
Dear Kelley!
It's getting close to all the Holidays! We visited a place called
Nauvoo. We learned some interesting facts about different religion
types. We sure are going to miss you over the holidays! Hope you
stay warm.
Week 5
Dear Kelley!
Wow, it’s so much warmer down here. They dance in a style
called Shag. It’s pretty neat to watch! My parents tried to
do the dance and they fell down. laughed at that! Wait until you
see the photos!! And did you know that the salamander is the state
amphibian?? Ewww!!
Week 6
Dear Kelley!
We’ve arrived to our next state. Too bad we can’t go
swimming, but my mom says the water is TOO cold!! We got to ride a
lot of trains. Did you know this place has the densest system of
highways and railroads in the U.S.?? People drive CRAZY here!
Week 7
Dear Kelley!
We’ve done soooooooooooooo much walking this week. This place
has forty-seven operational State parks, including 7 parks with
waterfront areas, covering 90,239 acres; 15 State-owned lakes and
ponds open to public fishing; 9 State forests and portions of 15
State parks open to public hunting; 36 wildlife management areas,
covering 88,348 acres, open to public hunting; 6 natural
environment areas containing 7,676 acres. WHEW!! Makes me tired
just thinking about it!!!
Week 8
Dear Kelley!
Happy Valentine’s Day! Mom is out drinking her Hazelnut
coffee, she says there are tons of hazelnuts here. Dad said if I
was good, he was going to take me to the Carousel Museum which
contains the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of
carousel horses. I love horses as much as Dreamer's Spy Kids, so
you better believe I’ll behave!!
Week 9
Dear Kelley!
This was a really big sightseeing day! First we went on top of a
commercial building on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. On top of it
sits a weather vane with a whale on it. The building was once the
state headquarters of Greenpeace. - "Save the whales". After that,
we went to Milford. Milford is known the world over for its unique
pink granite, discovered in the 1870's and quarried for many years
to grace the exteriors of museums, government buildings, monuments
and railroad stations.
