This cache is between Seaside and Astoria in the 165 acre
Cullaby Lake County Park, placed with the County's permission. It's
a great park with lots of trails and things to explore. Please
note that there is a $3 day use fee in effect for the park.
The most important thing to do when hunting this cache is to
enter the woods in the correct spot. If you've already found my
archived Day at the Races cache you'll know where you're going
already. If not, from the north end of the old race track you
should be able to see a well-traveled game trail. The park
sometimes uses this area as a storage space for tree trimmings so
you may have to look closely. This is what you're looking for:
Like I say - it's a game trail and the terrain rating is 2.5. Don't
expect a simple hike. Follow the trail for a while and then break
right, following the coords down the hill to the lower ground which
may be a little muddy if it's been raining a lot. I tried to keep
all the stages out of the swampy part as much as possible. Here
you'll find a tree with a waterproof box sitting at its base which
contains a laser pointer and a bunch of extra batteries. To make up
for the sometimes difficult-to-traverse trail the container is
sitting out in plain sight. Remove the laser from the case and
bring it with you on your journey. On this same tree you'll see a
mounted tube that looks like this:
Hold down the "on" button on the laser and aim the beam through the
pvc tube. A dot will appear on a tree not far away. Take the laser
with you to that 2nd tree and find the mounted tube attached to it.
Shine the beam through the tube just like before and you'll be led
to a 3rd tree. Don't forget to bring the laser with you and when
you shine it through the 3rd tree's tube you'll be shown the final
cache location.
The tubes are all camouflaged with some moss or leaves. The
stages aren't very far apart. In fact, when you get to the final
cache you'll be less than 100 feet away from where you started.
Don't forget to return the laser to its waterproof home when you're
done. If the batteries run out please dispose of them and replace
them with the extras provided. Also please let me know if there's
no extras left so I'll know to add more. Enjoy!
By the way - if you'd like to get all 7 caches currently hidden
in this area there is a nice well-maintained trail loop that will
take you to all of them. Half of it is paved and half is gravel. To
do the whole loop would be a hike of less than a mile and a half.
Although most maps don't show it there is a nice gravel trail that
forms the north side of the loop, basically connecting The
Cocoanuts and Dos Trees. You could even bike the whole thing, but
you'd need to chain up and go on foot to reach Real Genius and The
Biggest Tree Around.
