Mining in the Weisseritz valley

| Im Weißeritztal am Unterlauf der Wilden Weißeritz, schuff der kleine Fluss ein zum Teil 100m tiefes Kerbsohlental, welches vorwiegend im Freiberger Grauen Gneis, vereinzelt auch im Quarzporphyr liegt. Die Talhänge sind nicht nur beachtlich hoch, sondern teilweise auch sehr steil mit Klippenbildungen, Felswänden und Blockfeldern. Anreicherungen von Erzmineralen entlang des Tals entstanden im Rahmen der magmatischen und der sedimentären Bildungsprozesse sowie durch Absatz aus wässrigen, metallhaltigen Lösungen. |
Along the lower part of the stream "Wilde Weisseritz" the river formed a deep valley up to 100m depth. The rocks of the valley mainly consists of gneiss and porphyry. The hillsides are significant high and abrupt with cliffs, rock faces and boulder fields. The enrichments of ore along the valley are originated within the magmatic and sedimentary creation processes and also by deposition of watery metalliferous solutions. |
| Ab Tharandt, im Weißeritztal flussaufwärts, befinden sich zahlreiche Stolln und Mundlöcher historischen Bergbaues. Besonders um Edle Krone (Name eines früheren Bergwerkes) und Dorfhain wurde intensiver Silbererzbergbau betrieben. Die Erzlagerstätten sind Ausläufer des Freiberger Reviers. Der Bergbau im Weißeritztal begann jedoch deutlich später als um Freiberg, die erste urkundliche Erwähnung stammt von 1511. Im 16. Jhd. lag auch die Blütezeit des hiesigen Silberbergbaus, auch wenn Umfang und Bedeutung nicht mit dem Freiberger Revier zu vergleichen sind. Immerhin waren zeitweilig über zwanzig Gruben in Betrieb. |
From Tharandt up the river "Weisseritz" you can see many mineworkings of historical mining. Especially around "Edle Krone" (name of a former mine) and "Dorfhain" intensive silver mining was operated. The ore deposits are foothills of the big territory of Freiberg. However, the mining in the Weisseritz valley starts much later. It was first mentioned in a written document dated 1511. In the 16th century was the peak of the local silver mining although the dimension and meaning of it wasn't comparable with the territory of Freiberg. Anyway there were temporarily over twenty mines active. |
| Nach dem 30jährigen Krieg und dem Preisverfall infolge spanischer Silberimporte aus Südamerika konnte der Bergbau nicht mehr an alte Erfolge anknüpfen, obwohl es an entsprechenden Versuchen nicht mangelte. 1897 schloss die letzte Zeche (St. Michaelis, oberhalb der Barthmühle). Der "Bergbautraditionsverein Gewerkschaft Aurora Erbstolln e.V." versucht, mit einem Lehrpfad und einem kleinen Schaubergwerk die Erinnerung an diesen Teil der Vergangenheit im Tal der Wilden Weißeritz wach zu halten. |
After the 30 years war and the collapse of prices because of spanish silver imports from South America the silver mining in the Weisseritz valley was unable to establish to previous successes. In 1897 the last pit (St. Michaelis, above the "Barthmuehle") was closed. With an educational trail and the little visitor mine "Aurora Erbstolln" the registered association "Bergbautraditionsverein Gewerkschaft Aurora Erbstolln e.V." tries keeping alive this part of the history of the Weisseritz valley. |

An den oben angegebenen Koordinaten findet ihr an der Straße nach Dorfhain, eine Informationstafel. Damit ihr diesen Earthcache loggen könnt, beantwortet mir bitte folgende 3 Fragen per Message (Profil). Zwei der Antworten werdet ihr in Edle Krone finden, die dritte am Aurora Stolln.
Da es sich um einen Multi-Earthcache handelt, empfehle ich euch eine ausgedehnte Wander- bzw. Fahrradtour durch das Weißeritztal. Von Edle Krone bis zum Aurora Erbstolln sind es ca. 4,5km. Auf dem Weg zum Aurora Stolln durchstreift ihr nicht nur ein landschaftlich wunderschönes Tal, ihr werdet auch die zahlreichen Bergwerke von einst entdecken.
Eure Aufgabe dabei ist es, eines dieser ehemaligen Bergwerke zu fotografieren. Dabei kann es sich um ein noch sichtbares Mundloch als auch um ein Informationsschild handeln (siehe Spoiler!). Seid ihr am Aurora Stolln angekommen, fotografiert euch bitte vor dem Mundloch und fügt eure Bilder dem Log bei. |
Log conditions
At the above coordinates you can find an information board about the mining in the valley. In order to log this cache please answer me the following questions and send me the answers via message (profile). Two of the answers you can found in Edle Krone, the third one at the final.
This cache is a multi-earthcache! It's recommended to do a widespread cycling tour through the weisseritz valley and it's beautiful nature. The distance between the start position an the final is approximately 4,5 km. During the way through the valley you can discover some of the abandoned mines and many information boards about it.
During your way to the "Aurora Erbstolln" (coordinates below) please take a picture of one of the abandoned mines in the valley. It can be a still existing mine entrance or an information board (see spoiler). At the "Aurora Erbstolln" please take a picture of you or your gps-device in front of the mine and attach the photographs to your log.
