Tapahtuman muistoksi on asetettu geokätkö, joka on helposti löydettävissä: kapteenin havaitseman linjamerkin lähistöllä on pari vanhaa pientä taulua, joista korkeammassa kätkö on. Voit tarkistaa määrittämäsi linjamerkin oikeuden geocheckerillä. Huom! geochecker hyväksyy linjataululle ainoastaan viralliset, "Suomen rannikon loistot" -kirjasta löytyvät koordinaatit.
Laivaväylien takia paikalle EI pääse talvisaikaan jäätä pitkin Hailuodon, Oulunsalon, Kempeleen, Oritkarin eikä Hietasaaren suunnilta. Hietasaaren suunnalla liikenne tosin on vähintäänkin vähentynyt betoniterminaalin siirryttyä Vihreäsaareen.
[EN] A cache located on an island near Oulu that you can locate by solving the navigational mystery below. Cache is located at most 1.5 nautical miles from the cache co-ordinates.
Captain Store Katastråf is sailing with his ship M/S Haveri along 10 m waterway from Kattilankalla towards Oritkari harbour. When captain is changing the course in Löyhänmutka curve, his nephew Tobe Katastråf puts a stud on captains chair. About 30 minutes later the captain sees a leading beacon in compass bearing 45° and sits down in order to look at the map. ”@%£&½§*^”, the captains shouts, ”this is the fourth time today you do this”. He throws his nephew over board and continues: ”swim to that island with the leading beacon and wait until I return from Oulu”.
Help captain, or his nephew, if anything, by identifying the leading beacon and the island that the captain observed. You can do this by using a nautical chart, that you can find for example from the main library of Oulu. The speed of the ship was 9.7 knots, variation +8° and the deviation of the compass is described in table below.
For the memory of the event, there is a geocache near the leading beacon that the captain observed. There are two older and smaller beacons near the big one, of which the taller one contains the cache. You can check the validity of your result using geochecker (partly in Finnish). Only coordinates listed in "Suomen rannikon loistot" book are accepted.
Note that because of the wintertime waterways, it is NOT possible the enter the cache over ice from Hailuoto, Oulunsalo, Kempele, Oritkari or Hietasaari/Nallikari directions. Whereas, the suitable places to start your trip include Rajahauta harbour in Oulu or Kiviniemi in Haukipudas. Note also that the sea doesn't freeze at the same time in every place, so the ice further away from the shore may not be even nearly as tough as it is closer.
It is possible to observe passing ships from the island, if you are lucky. Information about arriving and departing vessels can be found from the Port of Oulu website. More information about Finnish fairways is available at the Finnish Transport Agency web site.
Disclaimer: The nephew of the captain was not harmed in reality because he is a fictional character. Both putting a stud on a chair and throwing someone over board do not belong to good seamanship.
