Am 30. April 1959, zur Eröffnung der Bundesgartenschau in
Dortmund, entstand in einer durch Krieg und Kohleabbau stark
gebeutelten Region der Westfalenpark. Auf dem Gelände des alten
Kaiser-Wilhelm-Hains, des Buschmühlenparks, einer Mülldeponie und
verwilderten Kleingartenanlagen entspross eine Parkanlage, deren
Mittelpunkt, das mit 220 Metern damals höchste deutsche Gebäude,
der Fernsehturm "Florian" bildet. Dieser besteht noch heute und hat
sich auch nach knapp 50 Jahren seinen Charme und seine Eleganz
bewahrt. Nach 1959 fand im Westfalenpark noch 1969 und 1991 die
Bundesgartenschau statt.

Der Geologische Garten im Westfalenpark, zeugt von den
Geheimnissen der Erdgeschichte und der Entwicklung der
Pflanzenwelt.
Das zentrale Element ist die Erdzeiten-Uhr. Die liegende, runde
Granitplatte umfaßt auf ihrem zeigerlosen "Zifferblatt" 4,5
Milliarden Jahre.
Farbige Pflastersteine, die strahlenförmig von der Uhr ausgehen,
markieren die zwölf Erdzeitalter von der Erdfrühzeit, dem
Präkambrium, bis hin zur Erdneuzeit, dem Tertiär und Quartär.
Der Garten ist paläobotanisch angelegt. Das heißt, die Pflanzen und
Steine, die hier nebeneinander zu sehen sind, entstanden im selben
Erdzeitalter, also in der Kreidezeit oder dem Peron, im Jura oder
im Devon.
Der "Wächterstein" am Eingang des Geologischen Gartens ist rund 30
Millionen Jahre alt. |

At 30 April 1959, for the
opening of the Bundesgartenschau in Dortmund, the Westphaliapark
developed in a region strongly shaken by war and coal dismantling.
On the area of the old emperor Wilhelm Hains, the shrub mill park,
a garbage depot and rotten allotment plants a park, to their
center, issued that with 220 meters at that time highest German
buildings, the TV tower "Florian" forms. This exists this very day
and also after scarcely 50 years its charm and its elegance
