Thunder Mountain
Wether you come in from the Bagby Side or the Molalla side you will
have a rigorous hike ahead of you.
The approach that I took was from the Molalla side, hiking on the
Baty Butte trail to it's junction with the Thunder Mountain and
Skookum Lake trails (see waypoint).
The Baty trailhead has my geocache, GC1VHDV Lost Creek Meadow, at
the very start. There are two trails to the right as you proceed
towards Baty Butte. As you descend the east flank of Baty you come
to an old forest road that has been pitted to discourage traffic.
Stay on the road going east and watch for a faint road on your
right marked with trail tape and a yellow trail sign. See the link
listed on this page for detailed trail information
Continue on this road for a while until you come to my cache,
GC1VHDC Skeeter, the trail turns off of the old road just a few
feet past the cache and is marked with trail ribbons. The path is
very faint in places, just keep a good bearing to the trail
junction waypoint and keep in mind that the sawn logs are a good
indication that you are on the trail. There are a few boggy spots
where you cannot see the trail, just stay at the same elevation and
look for the trail on the other side.
At the crossroads just go right and keep going up.... plenty of
switchbacks.
Be sure to look for the benchmark and reference marks on top of the
mountain.
Cache is a small ammo can in a clump of sallal near the old lookout
foundations. Just step onto the rock in the middle and reach
down.
