Killington History

DID YOU KNOW that Killington was known as Sherburne until 1999?

DID YOU KNOW that there is/was a session movement for the town of Killington to seceed from Vermont and be admitted into the state of New Hampshire (25 miles to the east)?

Believe it or not, that is all true. For more information on either of those points, you need not look further than Wikipedia or Google. Here is what the website Virtual Vermont has to say about Killington:

"It is thought to have been named for Killington, Northumberland, England, but nobody knows exactly why. Most of the proprietors being Connecticut residents, early meetings were held there. Early records were in the hand of Ezra Stiles, a Yale graduate and one of the founders of Brown University, considered the most learned man of his time in New England.

In 1800 Killington was renamed Sherburne in honor of Colonel Benjamin Sherburne, one of the original grantees. The mostly mountainous terrain was hardly in demand for farming, lending itself more to logging. Then, another use for mountainsides was discovered.

Needless to say, skiing is of primary interest here, not only in terms of local prosperity but also of identity. Because of the popularity of Killington Resort, the town itself had long been identified as "Killington" (especially by skiers), regardless of its real name. So much confusion was experienced by people looking for Killington (not realizing that they actually wanted Sherburne) that residents voted in 1999 to revert to the town's original name."

The Cache

This cache was placed 1 year since I placed my first Geo Cache in Maine. It is the easiest cache I have ever placed, finding it should not be a problem. I placed this cache right along US Route 4 for easy access for those travelling by. It is also right by the Killington Access Road for those crazy skiiers and snowboarders (myself included) hitting the slopes. Take a moment to admire the beautiful mountains while you are signing the log sheet.

Also, please be careful as US-4 is a busy and dangerous place to drive. Approaching this cache, look for a green "Vermont Information" sign. Pull in where you see this sign as your point of reference and the cache will be very close by.

Best of luck (not that you should need it on this cache), and happy caching! =)
