The Lake: It lies in Békásmegyer surrounded by the Honvéd-Hegyláb-Óbor streets and the electric substation in the Mezo street. The larger surroundings of the lake originally was a soggy lea growing towards the Danube. It was fed by the Róka or Béka springs sourced by the subsoil water. The area was decreased as the nearby buildings built up. Its fate was sealed by the building of the housing estate of Békásmegyer: most of its remaining parts were filled up in 1977 and these parts became base operations for the building operations. At the Óbor street side there was a reinforced concrete panel prefabrication site founded. The concrete base of the crane rails was built over one of the springs. Therefore the spring welled up at different spots in the neighboring mine pit. After finishing the buildings they neither did the country planning nor filled in the area because they could not stop the water burstings. Between the foot of mountain and the housing estate there abode the reedy, swampy area. The unclaimed area shortly turned into illegal landfill. Despite of the decrease of habitat and dumpings of building rubble the spotty and crested newt survived the adversities in the humid biotope – the lake is named after these little animals. The values of the nature were realized by three biology teachers: Ambrusné Judit Kenézy, László Csorba and Péter Száraz. By their initiative the protection of Lake Gotés got into the environmental protection concept of local authority of Óbuda-Békásmegyer (source: Á.Lohrberer, Á. Petho. J. Vajda, 1992). The local authority prepared rehabilitation plan, sponsored exploration drillings and ordered implementation works allotting a significant sum to the dredgings. Gyögy Farkas (clerk of environmental protection affairs) and Kálmán Kondor (local inhabitant) have imperishable credits for having the works started. The rehabilitation of Lake Gotés started in the fall of 1996 by the initiative of the local authority, the Guckler Károly foundation for environmental protection, the active local inhabitants, and the teachers and students. The plans and schedules of reconstruction works were created by Balázs Zacskó and Csaba Zoltán (students of University of Horticulture) supervised by professor Attila Csemez. In the first phase they worked up the shore and the depth of the upper lake (see illustration). For ensuring the water supply they scraped the spring and transported the mud and soil lifted out from the lake. The next spring they strengthened the shore, they did the landscaping and introduced plants. For the end of 1997 the other parts of the lake have been finished too and the four contiguous water surfaces connected by smaller canals came into being. In the fauna of the lake there can be found more protected species that raise the values of the lake again. Along playing significant role in the upkeep of the rich population of Articulata and bird species the Lake Gotés provides convenient habitat for reptiles and amphibia as well.
