In Avenida do Marechal Gomes da Costa, in Oporto, there’s a memorial in honour of Willy Brandt.
Gomes da Costa (1863-1929) foi o militar que chefiou o golpe que deu início à ditadura fascista.
Gomes da Costa was the military who led on the 28th May 1926 the coup d'état that originated the 48-year long dictatorship in Portugal.
Willy Brandt (1913-1992) combateu o regime nazi, tendo sido expulso da Alemanha, sendo-lhe retirada a nacionalidade alemã. Em consequência pediu a nacionalidade norueguesa. Durante a 2ª guerra mundial desenvolveu intensa actividade de denúncia do regime nazi.
Regressou à Alemanha no fim da guerra, tendo readquirido a nacionalidade alemã em 1948.
Foi prefeito de Berlim, ministro dos negócios estrangeiros, vice-chanceler e por fim chanceler.
Fim distinguido com o Prémio Nobel da Paz em 1971.
Willy Brandt (1913-1992) opposed the Nazi regime. So he was expatriated in 1938 by Hitler’s government and his German citizenship was revoked. He applied then for the Norwegian citizenship. During WWII he denounced actively the Nazi regime.
After the war he returned to Germany and in 1948 he obtained again the German citizenship.
He was mayor of Berlin, foreign minister, vice-chancellor and finally chancellor.
In 1971 he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
