Times Are Tough Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

crawburr: This cache seems to be too much work. Not only is there a lot of work involved to find it, but web pages keep disappearing and it is hard for me to keep up with that trouble. So I am archiving the cache and will put something else in its place.

Geocache Description:

This cache takes a little internet research, some imagination, and some driving. Do steps 3 and 4 at your computer. Do steps 1 and 2 and the final "behind the wheel."
The Poor Farm Page is your main reference page. It contains lots of links, old maps, lists of people, gravesites, and other information.

Bonjour! My name is Jules Dachard, and I was born in Paris in 1821. I immigrated to the United States when I was about 20, and settled in San Mateo, where I continued my craft as a watch maker for many years. In 1878, when I was about 56, I became quite ill and couldn't work anymore. For a while neighbors took care of me. But times were tough, my health got progressively worse, and before long I couldn't even walk. This is the story of what happened to me.

    A friend said he would take me to the hospital. He piled me in his wagon and drove me out Crystal Springs Road. Then we took a left turn at a fork in the road. I'll never forget seeing the road sign there, "Poor Farm Road", with an arrow to the left. You can see it on this old map and this more modern map . My heart sank - Mon Dieu! - it was the beginning of the end. It's a different roadsign now, with different names.
    AB=The TOTAL number of letters on the new green road sign, front/back/big/little/all directions.

    Welcome to the Poor Farm! ( map1 , map2 ) Have a seat! In front of you, down by that new yellow building, you can see (with a little imagination), a large, two-story building. I lived there for about a year. Once in a while the nurses would wheel me out to this spot, where you are now, and I would sit under this old pear tree. Nearby you can see a stairway up to a scupture garden. From up there, you can come back down using a different stairway. Count the number of stairs in that second stairway.
    CD=The number of stairs in the 2nd stairway.

    Here is where my story gets strange - I died. They buried me in the Poor Farm Cemetery. ( view1 , view2 ) I am there right now, as you read this, laying under the earth, with about 600 other Cemetery residents. Times are tough. We have to listen to, and feel, the rumbling of that annoying new highway. And right next to me, where I lay, a housing tract has been built, and now it is actually impossible to legally visit my grave. However, if you 'google map' this stage's coordinates, you can just make out my grave marker, fallen down. Unfortunately, you can't quite make out the grave number...
    EF = The number on my grave marker

    A couple of years ago a very strange, exciting thing happened at the cemetery. I was dozing underground, vaguely aware of the freeway noise, when I was jolted awake by nearby voices! And then I felt, and heard, a thump right on top of me. The weight of 20 or 30 lbs had plopped down right on TOP of me! I swear I could feel warmth, a heartbeat, and breathing, through the earth. Then a voice said, "Good girl, good girl", and I heard a metal stick inserted in the dirt right by my arm. There was a slight flapping sound, and I realized it was a small flag (pic of flags). Then the weight lifted, and walked away! About 25 minutes later the whole thing was repeated, but this time I was awake and heard the weight approach, and it had 4 legs, and when it thumped down on top of me, there was a slight continuous thumping. A wagging tail! It was a dog! A cadaver dog! A different voice murmured, "Atta girl", and another flag was inserted.
    Identify the dogs. NOTE: Hover your mouse over the "flags" pic to get preliminary names. then CONFIRM your dog names on the dog list page.
    G = Convert the 6nd letter of longer name (A=1, B=2, etc.)
    H = Convert the 2nd letter of shorter name
  5. This is very close to the end of my story. There's just one more thing. You can find a geocache based upon my story! It is located near the San Mateo County Genealogical Society . After you find the geocache, you can go inside and, with some research, decide for yourself: Fact? or Fiction?
