Geocache Description:

Congrats to Gilligan and Mary Jane on the FTF!!

Safety note: I would strongly advise not searching in front of the cannon, outside the wall. You won't find much and might become more of a statistic than you would like!

Container is clear, cylindrical plastic tube about six inches long.

Located at the Entrance of St. John’s Harbour, Fort Waldegrave is named after Lord Waldegrave who was Governor of Newfoundland during the Napoleanic Wars. This Fort along with others was built for the Protection of the City.

Cannons were first mounted at Fort Waldegrave during King William's War. During Queen Anne's War, the French captured the gun emplacement and fired the cannon across the harbour at the South Side Castle. A fort was built at the site and it served to protect St. John's harbour during the American Revolution.

Since World War I was largely confined to Europe, the defence of St. John's received little attention except that Waldegrave Battery, now Fort Waldegrave, was revived and manned by a local contingent, the Newfoundland Legion of Frontiersmen, and a log boom was again placed across the Narrows.

After the war the barracks buildings at Fort Walegrave were sold but fell into disrepair and were torn down. The two 4.7-inch guns that were here was transferred to Fort Amherst in 1941. The gun area was later turned into a parking lot.
