Wein hat in Wien mehr als 2000 Jahre Tradition (die Kelten betrieben bereits um 500 v. Chr. hier Weinbau). Seit 1132 sind Wiener Weingärten nachweisbar. 1784 wurde der Heurige geboren, durch ein Dekret von Kaiser Josef II (einem Sohn von Kaiserin Maria Theresia). Damit wurde den Weinbauern erlaubt, auf eigenem Grund eigenen Wein öffentlich auszuschenken. Und heute hat Wiener Wein international anerkannte Top Qualität. Übrigens soll Wien die einzige Hauptstadt der Welt sein, die innerhalb ihrer Grenzen Weinflächen hat (ca. 700 ha).
Since more than 2000 years grapes are pressed in Vienna area (the Celts did here already about 500 BC). Since 1132 AD Vienna vineyards are known. 1784 the "Heurige" was born (= Austrian word for "wine tavern" as well as for "this years wine"). Authorized by Josef II (a son of empress Maria Theresia) wine growers were allowed to offer their wine to public on their own property. Today Viennese wine has internationally acknowledged top quality. By the way: reportedly Vienna is the only capital in the world having vineyards within city limits (about 700 ha).
