Este caché forma pareja con otro en la Casa de Vacas de la Casa de Campo. Es una pareja bastante asimétrica: éste es un nano, cerca de un bonito edificio bien restaurado, muy visitado y situado en zona urbana rica en muggles y fácilmente accesible; mientras que el de la Casa de Campo es de tamaño medio, el edificio está en ruinas, situado en zona suburbana, en un lugar normalmente desierto y que requiere un cierto tiempo para llegar a él. Mi intención primera al ponerlos es que visitéis los dos lugares, ambos tienen su interés por razones diferentes; pero también quiero rendir un modesto homenaje a las vacas, simpáticos animalitos que nos acompañan desde hace unos 10.000 años, cuando fueron domesticados al principio del Neolítico. Aunque inicialmente criados para carne y piel, una mutación en nuestra especie permitió poco después que pudiéramos digerir su leche, y posteriormente vacas y toros se han usado para otros muchos fines, como la producción de vacunas (por eso se llaman así) y los sanfermines, entre otros. Ahora atraviesan un período de desprestigio, porque el abuso de su carne da lugar a varios problemas de salud, y porque sus emanaciones de metano por ambos extremos del tubo digestivo contribuyen sustancialmente (en un 18%, según la FAO) a la emisión de gases de invernadero y por tanto al calentamiento global.
La Casa de Vacas de El Retiro se construyó en 1874 como vaquería y centro de venta de leche, y como su compañera de la Casa de Campo, ha tenido variados usos a lo largo de su historia: ya entrado el siglo XX se convirtió en sala de fiestas, con el nombre de Pavillón (el original sería inadecuado para un sitio donde bailan las señoras, ¿no?), y tras un incendio pasó a ser propiedad del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, quien lo viene usando como sala de exposiciones y sede de eventos diversos.
El caché está cerca de la Casa de Vacas y es un nano magnético, por lo que tendréis que llevar lápiz, bolígrafo u otro artefacto para firmar. ¡Vista y suerte!

This cache (literally: House of Cows at El Retiro) is part of a pair with another of similar name near the Casa de Vacas de la Casa de Campo, also in Madrid. It is an odd couple: this one is a nano, close to a nice, well refurbished building in an urban park in central Madrid, easily accesible, and muggle-rich, while the one at Casa de Campo is of medium size, the building is in ruins, the park is quite wild, and the cache zone in a remote corner, so that it takes time to reach.
My purpose is to invite you to visit the two “Casas” (houses), both are modestly interesting in different ways. But I also wanted to pay a modest tribute to the cows themselves, these nice animals who have been living with us for the last 10.000 years, since they were domesticated at the beginning of the Neolitic. Though initially raised for meat and leather, a genetic mutation in our own species allowed us to digest their milk; later on cows and bulls have been used for other purposes, such as vaccine production or the Pamplona famous bull runs. Nowadays, however, they are being criticized because of the unhealthy consequences of eating too much of it, and also because the methane they throw through both ends of their digestive tract contributes substantially (18% according to the FAO) to the increase in greenhouse gases and therefore to global warming.
The Casa de Vacas de El Retiro was built in 1874 as a cow barn and milk selling point, and, as is the case with its mate at Casa de Campo, it has been used for various purposes since then. At the beginning of the XXth century it was converted into a dance hall, under the name of Pavillon, and after a fire it was adquired by the City, which has refurbished it into the current exhibition and events center.
