Geocache Description:

"The face of the river, in time, became a wonderful book...which told its mind to me without reserve, delivering its most cherished secrets as clearly as if it had uttered them with a voice. And it is not a book to be read once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day.
- Mark Twain -

The Fox-Wisconsin Waterway extends from Lake Michigan at Green Bay to the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien. It was a major point of contention between the British Empire and the new United States at the start of the American Revolution. It was later developed as a through route for barge navigation, but was closed in the 1950's.

There are currently 3 projects underway in accordance with the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway:

The FOX-WISCONSIN HERITAGE PARKWAY will traverse the state from Green Bay to Prairie du Chien, following both rivers. The rivers unique history will be highlighted by way of these connecting trails.

The WATER TRAIL PROJECT will create portages around all the locks on the system, to allow for continuous non-motorized boat travel of the river system.

The RAPID CROCHE TRANSFER STATION will prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species moving upstream from Wrightstown, while allowing for safe boat transfer.

Legislation is currently underway for designating the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway as a National Heritage Area.

If you walk to the rivers edge, you will see the old lock and dam that is currently idle, as well as the sound of the water as it spills over the impediment.

A notification form has been submitted to the DNR Headquarters in Oshkosh for permission to place the cache.
