The word 'slough' has too meanings: the obvious is, of course,
related to the waterway on which this cache is located; the other
is a mental condition, specifically "a state of moral degradation
or spiritual dejection."
As almost everyone who have been out can attest to, it is nearly
impossible to feel slough when on the water. Rather, it can be a
great cure for such a condition. Even being a just few feet from
shore is soothing.
I believe this has to do with what a friend noted after recently
taking his new inflatable kayak out for the first time: 'it's such
an alien place to be for our minds.' That combined with a 'mental
massage' of the gentle rocking motions and the visual white-noise
of the water surface and reflected sights, and the mind is taken
into another state of being. Truly a happy place.
The cache: A shiny purple-ish bison that should be obvious when
viewed from the right angle. When placed early in the fall, the
water level was low and it was necessary to nearly stand in my
inflatable kayak to reach the location. At other times of the year
when the water levels are higher, it might be possible to reach
without standing.
