Geocache Description:

A quick find near a historical marker in the Arcata Bottoms.

This cache is near the barracks where US Coast Guardsmen used to start their beach patrols during World War II.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor there were fears that the Japanese navy would attack the US mainland, including the shores of Humboldt County. On December 20, 1941, a tanker ship was torpedoed off Cape Mendocino about 50 miles south of here.

Coast Guardsmen would patrol the beach on foot and walk from dusk until dawn. During the day, the beaches were patrolled by blimps launched from nearby Samoa. Later Guardsmen would use horses to cover more ground.

A plaque memorializing these brave men is nearby.

Please do not disturb the residents of the house here. The cache is not on the grounds of the house.

This cache is a quick find at the end of Upper Bay Rd/Lamphere Rd.

Cache is a small camo Lock 'n' Lock.
