Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the listed coordinates.

The Maryland Municipal League Geocache Trail
Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns.
MML District 2

The printed MML Passport is no longer available. However, you may download a copy from the MML website here.

The trail consists of 11 MML Districts (regions).
The MML Geocache Trail project launched January 1, 2009 with 78 participating cities and towns. New towns are now joining the MML Geotrail! A trackable geo coin will be given to the first 500 geocachers, while supplies last, as an incentive for locating at least 2 municipal caches in each of the 11 districts. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers can download the passport from the MML web site or contact one of the designated county visitor centers. Geocachers must use the stamp in the cache on their passports and write down the cache code word listed in each cache. After at least 2 municipal caches in each district are discovered, geocachers may return to one of the county visitor centers and have their passports validated to receive their collectable coin.

For a complete list of participating visitor centers visit the MML web site at http://www.mdmunicipal.org/mmlhome/index.cfm or MGS web site at www.mdgps.org. You may also download a copy of the passport from the MML web site.

William Hall built what was to become the first house in Marydel in 1850. Mr. Hall’s property was both in Caroline County, Maryland, and Kent County, Delaware. The town started off with the name Halltown, but that was changed to Marydel about three years later. The main industry in the area at the time was fruit evaporating, a preservation process that required the construction of a factory. The industry shared the building with the town’s school for a while.

Along with other towns in the area, Marydel’s major spurt of growth occurred with the arrival of the railroad. Connecting Marydel to the north at Clayton, Delaware, and to the south at Oxford, Maryland, the P. B.W Railroad provided transportation of passengers and freight throughout the region.

Today, Marydel still stands astride the Mason-Dixon Line at the northern end of Caroline County. While the Maryland portion of the town is incorporated, the Delaware portion is not. Both sides of the town are served by the post office on the Maryland side; businesses are located on both sides.

The cache is NOT at the listed coordinates.

The listed coordinates will take you to a small park that has a Mason Dixon Crown Stone, a memorial plaque and a sign. Here you will gather information from these to determine the final cache location.

The final cache can be found at N 39° 06.BLN W 075° 44. PER

The earliest date on the plaque is ABCD.

The Crown Stone was removed for exhibition at a world’s Fair in 19EF

The stone was then displayed in the State house in Annapolis before being placed in storage. In 19GH it was returned to Marydel at the request of Marydel citizens.

The Crown Stone was moved a short distance from the roadside to its present location in JKLM.
