Geocache Description:

This the first in our series "KINGSTON RACING REMEMBERED'

The life-size bronze horse sculpture by Novacastrian artist, Julie Squires, was unveiled in August 2008, commemorating the role horses have played in shaping the character of Kingston.

In the 1940’s the City of Mordialloc granted permission for horses to swim in the Bay and it was from the Horse Paddock Car Park that horses were unloaded and led into the cold salty water for exercise. The water therapy was considered a great advantage by the local trainers as it assisted with injuries and was terrific for strengthening leg muscles.

Racehorses were brought to this area from both Epsom and Mentone racetracks to bathe in the Bay and were tethered to trees on this stretch of land before and after their swim. If you are lucky you may see horses taking a dip, they still get brought down here from time to time as there are still a couple of training stables in Mordialloc.

The starting point is near the Horse Paddock car park which requires you to buy a parking ticket so unless you are a local resident & have the appropriate permit I recommend you park on Beach Rd (which isn't ticketed) or in a nearby side street. The Mordialloc Surf Life Saving Club has an unticketed car park (just down the road) which is reasonably convenient during the week or in winter, (on the weekend during summer you may be challenged by a club member as to whether you are a member or not!)

At the starting point you should be at the sculpture and an information board. You need to find the following information:

1.When did the last racing track in Kingston close? = A B C D

2.What time did the local kids swim with the horses? = E F G

H = D/2

Your final destination is :

S 38 GG.FB2 E 145 GH.CEH

We hope you enjoy the walk along the foreshore. Be wary of walking muggles as they can come upon you pretty quickly.
