Geocache Description:

This cache is located in The Virgina Wood section of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. There are several access points and trails in the area but I used the parking on Pond Street and the "Historic Trail" (Yellow Blazes) to place this and the Gas Saver. Trails are well marked and terrain is pretty gentle. The Spot Pond Brook runs through here and has two nice waterfalls where it had been dammed for power to run mills.

I have always enjoyed my caching adventures in the Fells and thought I should place a cache there. Having a daughter named Virginia, this area seemed like the obvious choice! This area was donated by the Tudor family to the "Trustees of Public Reservations" in 1891 and named in honor of their daughter Virginia who had recently died in an accident (supposedly fell off her horse while riding in this area). This donation was the first gift of land for conservation purposes in the country and became the model for similar donations throughout the country. It is now a part of the 2060 acre Middlesex Fells Reservation managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The numbered posts you pass along the way refer to stops on the "Self Guided Tour of the Spot Pond Brook Archaeological District". I put a copy in the container-please leave it there for others to enjoy. Copies of the brochure are available from the Friends of Middlesex Fells or at Reservation Headquarters across the street on Woodland Road or online at https://www.friendsofthefells.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Spot_Pond_Brook_Pamphlet_-_Final.pdf. The booklet describes the history of the mills and other industry located here since the 1600's. The cache itself is hidden a short distance off the trail and should be findable in all but very snowy conditions. It is a medium sized lock&lock container. You can return the way you came or continue around the loop to return to your car. Enjoy your tour of this little used area! Congrats to PETTECH for the pre-dawn FTF!
