Generally, one can see a small herd of Bison between the cache location and Highway 970.
From the cache location, driving east along Swauk Prarie road will take you past the ranch where they live, along the south side of Swauk Prarie road. This road is a loop road, so you can enter and exit at either end from Highway 970.
Once the most plentiful large mammal in North America, Bison originally ranged from Great Bear Lake in far northwest Canada, as far south as the Mexican state of Durango, as far east as the Appalacian Mtns, and west into eastern Oregon. Bison populations went from an estimated 60-100 MILLION animals in the mid 1800's, to near extinction in the 1880s. By 1889 there were 831 Bison remaining in North America. Of those, only 281 were in the U.S. Currently they number around 350,000 animals. See the "related web page" for a wealth of Wikipedia info on Bison. A WORD OF CAUTION, DO NOT APPROACH THESE ANIMALS!!! THEY CAN RUN WAY FASTER THAN YOU! An ammo can just did not seem appropriate, so here you are looking for the cache name. This should be available even with some snow on the ground.
